An American passport, a support from a certain segment of the population, and act like an UMBRELLA is shoved up your backside.

    End thread.

I think you must transcend the sport. Be an icon of the time and not just an icon of boxing.

Jack Dempsey - Americas pin up boy

Ali - Many loved him and many hated him but he transcended the sport like no other before him and since, everyones greatness will forever be measured against this guy - The GREATEST LEGEND.

Tyson - Became the most feared man on the planet to both people who loved boxing, to casuals who only watched HIS fights and was well known to people who never watched boxing at all - Legend

SRL - African American version of Jack Dempsey - Became Americas pin up boy - Legend

Manny Pacquiao - Became Asia's pin up boy on the back of an exciting style, unparalleled 8 division titles and a likeable personality - Legend

FMJ - Love him or hate him, was probably the most polarising boxer since Ali, just as many people bought his fights to watch him lose as did to watch him win, exploited the digital age like no other and showed everyone that you can take control yourself - Legend

Cotto - This guy was hardcore, faced the best when they were at their best. May and Pac wanted to fight this guy as they knew his legion of adoring fans would along with their own take care of the promotion for them. Will remain a hero the people of Puerto Rico long after he passes. Legend

By lighting up a cigarette in the ring and smoking it during your interview after KO'ing your opponent.

I don't know. I think worldwide boxing is as popular as it ever was. It's just not as popular as it once was in all of the same places. The total number of boxers and the quality level of the competition is just as high as it's ever been if you want to compare top tens of every decade.

If you want to discuss mainstream fame then there are probably only five or six boxers who were internationally famous. Johnson, Dempsey, Ali, Robinson, Tyson, and possibly Leonard or Louis.
