I'm not sure if this has been asked before (my first post been a lurker a while), But what do trainers look for in new boxers to identify that they could become a prospect? is it how fast they pick things up? consistency? (I've been boxing myself for only 2 months not sure if I can call it boxing yet or just conditioning)

Just wondering what your guys views are

Well i think a coach notices a good boxer is coming up from his learning rate, fitness rate and most important heart and dedication.. being able to learn quickly and become fit at the same time is very hard and without heart and dedication you wont manage

I'd imagine the natural aptitude for the movements involved, and how easily he picks up and does things he is told, and his work ethic, and if he listens.
As factors in boxing, is if he hangs in sparring, takes a beating but comes back the next day for more.
Fitness and the physical side of things aren't as important, in my opinion, because they can be developed by nearly anyone with some time, they aren't a "talent" as such, except in extreme cases, like running a 5 minute mile with no prior running experience.

In my opinion most coaches would be looking to see if they have general athletic ability and natural coordination. Back when I was boxing the first time I sparred my coach (who was an olympic coach in 2004) commented afterwards that I was born to box (nobody is born to do anything, everything is developed but that's another topic) and I could do it all if I backed myself. From what I remember of that session I showed reflexes and timing when it came to parrying punches, I didn't land much of anything but I saw everything and avoided getting touched.
Good vision would have to be near the top of the list of things that coaches look for I'd say. If I was coaching boxing I'd find out if the boxer played many sports as a kid, the more different sports someone plays as a kid the better, it's been shown that they're better decision makers and learn things more easily.

Y'all are ridiculous. A coach knows you have potential after you win some bouts.

Really? Then why do coaches persevere with certain boxers that keep losing? If a coach couldn't recognize signs of potential until they fought, I'd question if the coach had watched boxing before... You can tell alot about a fighter just from watching them hit the heavy bag; balance, coordination etc.

Not really alot of peoplecan have all the aspects you mentioned look amazing on the bag but not be able to replicate it in a ring. Who cares if your **** and have potential? Your still ****. Potential only matters when its reached but you can say that everyone who is good "had potential"

You've never watched a new guy use the bag, work the pads, shadow box, whatever and think to yourself he has some potential?

Who said anything about it translating to the ring? The question is does the guy/gal have some skill that makes him/her stand out from the rest? A good coach has the ability to pick out these attributes and build upon them. These attributes that make them stand out are what gives them potential, not whether they're good in the ring.

If you're **** but have potential, that's when a coach does his thing. There are alot of different aspects to a fighter. If someone looks like dynamite on the bag but can't replicate it in the ring it's probably a mental/experience issue.
You can be good and win most of your fights but not have much potential, you might've just maxed out your positive attributes and there's nowhere else to go.
I don't think you really understand what 'Potential' means.

    This :deal

But I'd replace the word skill with ability, I'm probably being pedantic but they're different things.
