His height and reach over Jones wasn't that significant. I think he'd do about as good as Hopkins did, Jones might even beat him a little more soundly, even. I just don't see Jones having a whole lot of trouble working around Monzon's probing jab and he sure as hell won't have much luck timing his right hands as he did against the opposition he faced, which was vastly inferior to that of Jones. Monzon beat good fighters, but the fighters he fought didn't really possess any real physical edge over himself.. not anything near what Jones had.
True, but Jones never faced anyone on the level of Monzon, nor someone with any kind of stylistic problems. Hopkins was pre-prime and fought with a much different style than Monzon, but still managed to take 3 or 4 rounds. I think Monzon's subtle pressure and probing jab (unlike Hopkins's pressure, which allowed him to get caught often with counters off the ropes) would make for a harder matchup stylistically, and then there's the fact that Monzon was far more experienced than the Hopkins Jones faced, or Jones for that matter.
I don't even see Jones really getting tangled up in the ropes that often, unless he gets overconfident in spots and elects to fight off them, which I can't really see him getting too overconfident against Monzon once he sees what a handful he'll be. Jones had some trouble with pressure, but the kind've pressure he had trouble with was more like a blitz of pressure, like the kind that Griffin was putting on him, which is why I don't see Monzon's 'subtle pressure' as you call it really doing anything other than keeping Jones on his toes for most the fight.
Monzon was a very well rounded boxer who could hit and fight rough also. I see some people saying he was not as good as Jones techinaclly. I disagree. I don't see Jones as top 25 middleweight, unless i'm being generous.
