1)keep off the ropes and keep the fight at ring centre. Anytime he gets caught on the ropes he needs to pivot to his left and margos right away from the danger shots or tie margo up to get the action stopped 2) tie him up and regularly. Tie up both arms from the outside especially margos left his right isnt as strong. 3) at ring centre keep marg turning by circling him he cannot hit without setting himself hes not technical enough 4) work the body and vary his jab so he goes to the chest and the stomach that stops most fighters in their tracks
With regard to this rematch, another poster already quoted Apollo Creed's trainer; "I saw you beat that man like I never so no man get beat, and the man just kept comin'. We don't need no man like that in out lives." As much as I would love to see a rematch, I think Cotto would be wise to find some other direction to point his career.
Do what he did in the 1st 6 rds of their 1st fight only dont have a terrible strength zapping 7th then repeat what you did in rds 1-6 in rds 7-12 & you have yourself a clear-cut UD victory. This will work 100% of the time on a computer game but as Miguel found out last time, this is some real **** here. Botswana :smoke
Actually, i think the answer to his stamina COULD lay in not putting so much into his punches. Look... its obvious he cant hurt marg, When a fighter puts so much into his combos like cotto did, it takes more out of them then when throwing a nice loose punch.... Dont put so much into his shots, keep mobile like he was, hold a bit more maybe down the stretch. I really think by putting less on his shots, having a training camp focused on being a matador type fighter. I think he could win 6 rounds in the rematch, and not go down..... i cant wait for the rematch.... i hope cotto wasnt too badly effected by the loss.
One of the primary reasons Cotto has stamina issues is because he cranks those little arms of his as hard as he can when he's throwing punches. Against a Margarito type, who he cannot hurt, he needs to lighten up on his shots and empasize scoring, not doing damage. Cotto would also benefit tremendously by holding, and throwing pot shots and moving - not planting his feet and throwing 5 punch combinations. Score and not get hit as much as possible. This will ensure he has enough fuel to see the final bell, and enough points to win.
Cotto should hold his hand out and hope that Margarito trips into it real real hard over and over again. Other than this scenario Margarito's got his number.
No he didn't those shots that Cotto threw were not very hard because he was backpeddling and punching off of his backfoot, as a result he didn't commit to his punches or get his weight behind them, PW hit Margo alot harder than Cotto ever did.
I thought that Cotto would have problems with Margo in the fight, and he did...He is clearly more talented but the writing was on the wall with Cotto but many didnt want to believe it...With that being said, I think that he can beat margo but it will take some toughness, since its already been proven that Cotto cant box and keep Margo off him... Cotto needs to score and not try and knock Margo out. Land his shots and move its really that simple. In the first fight he stayed in front to much and allowed Margo to bang away at him...Cotto cant be scared to go to the body like he was in the first fight. The key is to make Margo turn and reset. What ever he does he is going to have to be tougher then he was in the first fight, I just dont think that he has it in him...
So... fight like Floyd, is what everyone's saying? I don't think Cotto would be able to maintain such a style, it's just not him. That's why he got knocked out in the first fight. His outboxing really wasn't that impressive. He didn't get off the ropes fast enough.
i agree. miguel rarely ties up. not even pw had the firepower to ko tony so cotto ain't going to ko him. just do what he did in the first fight and tie up. he also had a hard time going to the body, but even he admitted he had trouble. he can also work the angles and do more upper body movement like a whitaker so he won't tire so fast from his legs as much. tony is a beast tho.
He isnt strong enough to stand in front of Margo...He isnt a good enough boxer to avoid taking the shots. I dont think that he has to fight like Floyd, Im thinking more like Ruiz...I know that people will grind teeth just thinking about that...But think, if Cotto who has the fast hands and is far better skillwise and in a techincal sense would get off clinch then move off to his right then start over and do it again, margo wouldnt be able to get off...He has to come forward and set his back foot. If Cotto could do that for the first 5 or 6 rounds he would be strong enough to finish the fight and would be ahead on the cards.
I haven't watched the fight in a while, but I just remember Cotto doing a lot of inefficient moving. Whenever he punched, it was always from the ropes, returning fire. He didn't do a good job turning Margarito from the ropes at all. He would be in between posts on the ropes, and instead of turning him, just move either left or right into a corner, taking more punches while circling around. Cotto never gave himself space to move. Edit: I have it in my mind though that Cotto could hurt him to the body. I was rooting for Margarito in the first fight (I never side with the Puerto Rican, haha), but in regards to this topic, I think Cotto could get more space going for the body. Its been said over and over again though. Cotto even said it himself, that it was harder to get to the body than he thought. I think the pressure just got to Cotto and his entire offense was reactionary rather than voluntary. "**** he punched me, I need to score points now" and Cotto unleashes a dazzling combo which surprisingly has no effect. And he and us, the audience, both said "what the ****."
I think that Cottos best chance of beating margarito is the opposite of what most people would think. I think he needs to stop moving, stand his ground, and work the body. In the first fight I think Cotto wasted his energy by moving too much and gave marg the opportunity to move forward constantly which is the only way he is effective. Cotto needs to plant his feet, dig hooks to the body, and back marg up. He may just not be strong enough, but I think its his only chance.
