He doesn't compare to any of the big hitters from the 70s on. Too small and not enough compensating factors to make up for his lack of size and weight.

Nowadays he'd cut to LHW, where his power would be pretty good. Maybe on par with Joe Smith Jr or prime Kovalev. Maybe better. Hard to say given the gloves he'd be forced to wear.

I have always believed that the hardest puncher in an era, is rarely if ever the dominant champion of that era, or the knockout artist of that era.

I am also sympathetic to the idea that as heavyweights have got bigger, the mean and maximum power has tended to increase.

I also don't rate power very highly as a commodity, if it is not backed up by other attributes.

If we set up a pressure sensor like in Rocky 4, then I could imagine Dempsey being surpassed not only by later ATGs, like Liston, Foreman and Lewis, and also men who were not great such as Williams, Shavers, and Bruno.

That might see him pushed quite far down the list, but it misses the point.

What made Dempsey an exceptional fighter, was not just his power, but also his finesse as a finisher.

In that regard he has very few peers in fistic history!

Pretty much every power punching heavyweight in history planted their feet.

Dempsey found a way to fall into his punches, stopping himself on his opponents jaw, then recover and reset.

This resulted in some truly terrible punches!
