I'm no fan of Conteh's resume, but seriously, Ahumada flogged Bob Foster. Anyone that has seen that fight knows that. Sure Bob was old, but Ahumda was all class in that fight. Even against Conteh you could tell he was world class. That Ahumada would have outboxed Saad Muhammad and Marvin Johnson for mine.
Marvin Johnson always seems to be the one from that era afforded a level of respect higher than his abilities for me, certainly compared to a number of other 70s contenders like Kates, Ahumada, Bennett, Finnegan that were clearly around the same level ability wise for me and get none of the same respect...maybe it was the win over the shot Galindez that did it. At least COnteh is usually praised with the rightful caveats his careers brings. Finnegan was stopped on cuts btw in a fight he was winning against Schmidtke, even against Foster it was more exhaustion and accumulation that did it.He shrugged off some massive bombs in that fight, the kind of punches that laid out Tiger and Quarry. Not the most naturally talented of the 70s crop and a short pro prime because of lengthy amatuer wear and tear and subsequent injuries, but an underrated badass imo.basically a 70s Joey Maxim standup skills wise, though obviously not on the same level for overall career.
Ahumada incidentally came up during a deep, rock solid Argentinian middle\light heavy scene. Some of those guys like Peralta, Aguilar etc were damn good fighters.Just relatively obscure and didn't get many breaks. He was very highly rated on the east coast after coming under the Gil Clancy agis and seemingly improving all the time, as anyone who was following what was going on in the division at the time would know.IF anything most felt he would be a bit much for Conteh in his first world title fight and only three years into his career.Jorge was very good, one of the best light heavies not to win a title imo and a more talented versatile fighter than Yaqui Lopez, who imo would have been knocked out mid-to late by the pre-hand break cokehead Conteh thatJorge fought.Yaqui was rocked a good few times with half-assed rights that weren't even turned over nearly every time Conteh threw and landed them in that fight...which was about 10 times over the whole 15 rounds. He may have been able to soundly outwork the defensively rusty, one handed fighter coming off a year and a half layoff he had in front of him that night, but if you watch it closely was actually made cautious for most of the bout by the few heavy left hooks and odd pushed right Conteh hit him with early on which devolved the fight into mostly a left hand fest...yet guys like He will maintain the man had no power:-(.
This is why you have to give Conteh some props...the fight with Lopez...he dominated and won with one hand..and improved over Galindez's two showings vs Lopez.
Have never seen the Finnegan-Kraut fight lora, duly noted. Johnson I guess, like Parlov, gets a bit of respect for actually being one of the contenders to break out and actually win a strap at some point. But I agree, the guys you mentioned were all of the highest calibre. I'd favour Kates to tear Andre Ward a new arsehole.
