It's funny how much credit Vitali gets for giving a tough fight to a 37 year old, heaviest weight of his career, inactive for a year Lennox Lewis but fairly losing.

The last time Lewis came into a fight undertrained, he was laid out by Oleg Maskaev's son.

Ray Mercer gave a prime Lewis hell. He arguably won or drew with Lewis. None of this "he gave him a tough fight for 6 rounds but fairly lost because his eye was too badly cut".

Vitali's game losing effort can't touch Tim Witherspoon's performance against Larry Holmes in 1983 with a 10 foot Golota.

Lewis didn't have to get Vitali's and the fans' hopes up by pretending he was interested in a rematch and then retiring, but it's no worse than the numerous champs who never gave rematches to guys who gave them very tough fights or in which they controversially won. And in a lot of other cases, those champs kept on fighting and didn't give a rematch, rather than just enjoying their retirement.

Not sure about the prime lennox part but you're right I think Lennox felt something in that fight that told him time to not push this thing any longer.

Glad you mentioned that. Talk about Witherspoon around here and the Klit-ites all sneer "Tim Witherspoon couldn't fight for ****, I know all about Tim Witherspoon because I typed his name into boxrec" :nut

Oh and Tim was shorter than both Klits too which instantly makes him inferior. Amazing Lewis got the win really when you consider his height disadvantage :D

First, I want to say that I respect both Lewis and Klitschko, two great HWs. And it was a great fight where they both gave it all.

In the end, Lewis won the fight fair and clearly. Vitali may have been ahead on the scorecards, but that don't matter, he was too hurt to continue because of the punches that Lewis landed on his face. That's why he lost by TKO, and that's boxing. No controversy there.

I do think Lewis retired because he felt he might well lose to Vitali in a rematch. So in a way, saying Vitali retired him is not entirely false.

However I think Lewis sleeps just fine, knowing he defeated Vitali fairly in a fight where Lewis himself was pretty old and past his prime. Lewis looked very slow in the match and faded, yet managed to pull the win out of his hat. A pretty impressive feat considering how Vitali became the next consensus #1 heavy after Lewis retired. Prime Lewis would have to be a heavy favourite against a prime Vitali.

I am a fan of both fighters and I think they both showed toughness in their fight. Vitali proved himself and so did Lewis. Respect to both of them.
