If Marciano tried to become a heavyweight over the past 20 years, we likely would have never known his name. He would take so much damage over his entire career arc from the significantly larger, heavier and longer heavies of this day that the injuries would mount and force him to retire, much as they were a factor in his own career against smaller, decrepit and just not very good heavies. The best outcome is a Joe Mesi type career, one in which he may achieve a notable victory but far sooner than later has to bow out with compounded injuries.
Have to agree with most of this and I could see any of the other men winning as well as they were great fighters. Wlad would be the easiest and Foreman the hardest based on styles. Lewis would absolutely give him fits but Marciano isn’t Tua. Tua just stood there taking shots looking utterly confused. Marciano wouldn’t do that but top prime ready Lewis was a smart man who stuck to a game plan could see a very boring fight there. Marciano v Liston and Foreman is prob my favorite round robin if I had to pick one.
The heavyweights today are less decrepit? Lmao most of them are part time fighters taking time away from there day jobs. Although there is something to what you’re saying. Career arc would probably be shorter something akin to Frazier but then again Tyson and Tua managed to get plenty of fights in so who knows? Only thing that set rocky back was his back and hand that he’d break occasionally.
Marciano's biggest wins are against an absolutely shot to sh*t one handed Joe Louis, an 80 fight vet (that's 80 HEAVYWEIGHT fights) in Walcott and Ezz who went .500 for the remainder of his flailing career and Old Archie. That's a nursing home roll call.
If there's one thing about Marciano I know, its that you'd have to kill him to stop him. He'd keep coming, and keep coming, and just keep coming. His nose can hang off, he marches forward, he's blinded, he still marches forward, he's behind on points, he still marches forward. He never accepted defeat in his mind Lewis would have his hands full, Marciano wouldn't hide in a shell for the rest of the fight if he got a bit hurt
You could play this game with any HW not named Ali and Louis. Foreman’s best wins were against a shot out of shape joe Frazier and he lost to feather fisted young and over rated Morrison. So what he beat Norton who didn’t beat Norton? See it’s stupid to have these nonsensical arguments we can also play that game with Wlad Lewis Tyson Liston if you’d like as well its loads of fun. But unlike some I would rather choose to celebrate the warriors they all were and for being great champions that beat who was in front of them for the most part.
Of that group he would have the best chance against Larry Holmes. While Holmes is arguably the best of the bunch, it is a straight up swarmer on boxer match up, and Holmes has manageable power and body weight for Marciano to impose his style against. I migth just make Marciano the favorite here. George Foreman is pure poison for him. He is a physically larger slugger, with a solid chin. I think that he would do better than Joe Frazier did due to his physical strength and conditioning, but I cannot in all conscience make him the favorite here. The same logic would apply to Sonny Liston, who might give him a bit more breathing space early on, but was a master at exploiting a come forward fighters momentum, and would draw him onto a carefully prepared killing field. Lewis and Wlad are probably just to big, and end up tiring him out and stopping him. He has a chance due to their chins being, let's play it safe, not of the caliber of the other opponents being discussed. He would have a better chance against Wlad due to his lack of inside game.
Larry Holmes Larry busts up Rocky pretty bad but eventually a right hand over the top and it’s good night Vienna for Holmes. George Foreman George out muscles Rocky early, decks him twice in the first round but punches himself out in the second. From the third round on Rocky takes over as the youngster gets more frustrated as the right hands over the top take their toll. George bravely sticks with it but weakened and fatigued experience let’s him down. Marciano on points. Sonny Liston A gruelling fight with Rocky outlasting Sonny. Sonnys jab really really wouldn’t feature. Sonny falls in behind his jab right where Rocky wants him. Smothered and hit harder on the chin than he was used to Liston breaks down after some frustration in not being able to find the full leverage to utilise his full power. Lennox Lewis. If Lewis came up in the 1950s He would have been a different fighter - those kinds of long guys either stayed too thin or had no gass tank to last. But if Marciano came up in the 1990s he would have been destroyed by Lewis because he would have bulked up, still been too little, too muscle bound and not pacey enough to compete fairly. Bigger gloves & shorter rounds favour the giant. Wlad, Same with Lewis. A PED ridden version of Rocky still isn’t good enough to compete with a taller modern body builder on steroids using size as a weapon. Throw Wlad into the 1950s and he’s just a string bean with a long neck.
I have a question (not an argument or nothin', I enjoy what you wrote). You said Marciano would tire against them, yet Wlad has been known to gas in 5 rounds, and Marciano has been known to throw 100 power punches in the 15th round I assume you meant that they'd lean on him? Of course, Marciano could throw body shots at them, especially Wlad, and make them tire quicker? These body shots would have their added weight since they're leaning on Marciano, and Marciano HAS pushed around a 300lbs punching bag before with his shots It's just hard for me to imagine the fighter I regard as the most well conditioned heavyweight ever gassing before two giants that have to move around with 235lbs of body
You can be as fit as a fiddle but pushing that extra weight about tires you a lot quicker than it would wrestling with someone your own size.
Then the smart money would be on "not trying to wrestle against them". If I were Marciano I'd give them some leeway and focus on body shots (maybe throw a sneaky headbutt in there too) Bigger men have tried to lean on Marciano before
I wouldn't favor him to beat any of the fighters mentioned. Lewis and Wlad have the easiest time with him. Prime versions of these guys are the equivalent to space aliens compared to the crop Marciano defeated. In all cases, Marciano gets battered and dropped repeatedly forcing a stoppage. He is simply ill-equipped for this level of athlete. Nor should he really be asked to beat these guys. No one is asking the 1955 Cleveland Browns to beat the 2018 Patriots. Now stop the silliness.
