How does matchmaking work in terms of mandatories, PPVs, and unification fights?

I was wondering how upcoming fights are made for fighters by their matchmakers and promoters. Also, how much of a say does a fighter have in choosing his next fights?

Plus, if a fighter becomes a champion, how do mandatory title defenses work? How often must he make a title defense without getting stripped by the sanctioning body?

Thirdly, how do certain fights become PPV when some only achieve the potential of being blockbusters?

Finally, how do unification fights work out? How does this relate to the mandatory title defenses I mentioned earlier? Who arranges such tournament such as the 2001 eliminator series in which BHOP became the first ever unified and undisputed WBA/WBC/IBF/WBO middleweight champ?

    1. It depends. A lot of times, like a DPK fighter, can ask Don if the fight is cool. And Don will allow or not allow it. The Promoter decides which fight makes the most fiscal sense, and will enhance the fighters legact better. Oscar de la Hoya wont allow Joel Casamayor anywhere near Nate Campbell for good reason. Oscar knows as I know that Campbell will take Casa to school, and that will put one of Oscar's own RING belts in the hands of DKP, so Oscar will never allow that, thus depriving the fans, and cheating them out of a great fight.

    2. Typically, they should have up to a year to defend the title against a number one contender, but this is where it gets shady, and "grey area territory"....For example, Margarito won the IBF from Cintron not too long ago, but had to dump it, in order to fight for Cotto's WBA title. How dumb was that ****? Now the IBF's credibility is shot to **** at the WW division, as Marg is recognized as THEE World's Champion, yet Zab Judah or Clottey? is it are going to emerge as IBF Champion. At that point, they are an Organizational Title Holder, only, NOT The World's Champion. Same **** happened when Tapia decided to fight Paulie Ayala, he got stripped of the WBA or the IBF title, cannot remember which one, for taking a massive, big fight, because he wouldnt defend against the non descript "Number one contender" who paid his sanctioning fees. But guys like Oscar, who have Jose Suliaman in their pockets, can hold on to the belt for more than a year without defending it, like Oscar did when he beat Battle Damaged Mayorga for the WBC belt.

    3. This **** is also Shady. Who determines what fights ought to be PPV worthy? It is probably a mutual decision between the greedy ass Promoter (GBP, Top Rank) and HBO I felt that Cotto-Margarito was an HBO WCB level fight, and as such, I didnt buy it. I dont feel that old man River, AKA "The Cream of Wheat man" Hopkins, and Pavlik is worthy of PPV either. Nor is Oscar and Mini Me. Sugar and Mayorga however, is free on HBO and I'd pay to see that. Tua and Aereola should also be free HBO as should Calzaghe and Tarver's little son. It is strictly subjective.
