How does Mosley's win over Margarito compare to Ali-Foreman?

Margarito probably wasn't quite as intimidating for Mosley as Foreman was for Ali but the two situations are pretty similar. Mosley is several years older than Ali at the time of his big comeback win over the reigning champ.

    The similarities are interesting.

The man who beat the man aspect of it. How Margarito/Foreman were both seemingly invulnerable, impossible to slow down or hurt. The suprise at the upset.

Meh, not looking forward to the flipping out at the mere mention of the two being similar. We KNOW there's a talent gap.

Who do you say the talent gap favors? Foreman is the stronger opponent but I think Mosley's personal performance surpasses Ali's rope a dope. Just think if Ali had pummeled Foreman all over the ring from the start like Mosley did to Margarito?

They're quite similar. Foreman is a far better win, but Mosley beat Margarito more impressively and was older than Ali was.

No comparison, Margarito's bubble had allready been burst by Williams.Foreman was unbeaten and seen as unbeatable,he had pulverised Frazier and Norton, who had both given Ali tough life or death fights.Foreman was seen as the hardest hitting heavyweight of all time, people feared he might kill Ali.

I suppose the Mosley-Cotto-Margo round-robin can be looked at as a sort of poor man's Ali-Frazier-Foreman. However, Mosley never quite captured the mystique Ali once had, Cotto was never really as highly regarded as Frazier, and Margo never had the invincible "aura" that Foreman had.

I don't see the similarity myself, because Mosley just dominated every round against Margarito, whereas Ali had to execute a perilous strategy and undergo some intense assaults. Also, Foreman was viewed as an ATG destruction machine, Margarito was viewed as an iron-chinned fighter with exploitable weaknesses.

Interesting thread, Brady. There are a lot of similarities in these fights.

While Margarito was not feared as much as Foreman, both seemed invincible. Despite his age, Mosley was also given a bit more of a chance going in.

Ali's win will always be a superior achievement, but Mosley's win will be the superior performance. I hope that makes sense.

Not even close. Mosley's win was great, but Ali beating Foreman is the pinnacle.

I don't think anyone is saying Mosley beating Margarito is nearly as great an accomplishment, just that the circumstances are similar.

It's at least as close to it as Mosley could possibly get. Margo did have a certain aura of invulnerability heading into the fight, although not quite Foremanesque. The rocks in gloves ordeal is the one thing that takes away from it, but beating senseless and knocking out the man who had never been knocked out before at 37 is still quite a feat for Mosley. He put himself back into the ATG conversation with that performance. What's most impressive is that Mosley actually looked his best ever at 37, while Ali had lost a step or two at 32. Obviously, fighters age better today than in the past due to many factors (different rules, generally fewer fights, better nutrition, etc.) but none of that takes anything away from the fact that Mosely is the one doing it. I was only pulling for Mosley because he was the underdog but with that performance, he has made me into a fan.
