Robinson had perfect timing and accuracy. That beats speed.

The question is how does SRL deal with Robinson's speed?

However, their hand speeds are so close that we are arguing inches here.

Italians tended to be slow plodders didn't they? The likes of Pep, Pastriani, Canzoneri, Dundee, Janiro, Loi, Benvenuti....

Do you seriously think Robinson would fail to win a belt today as 'there are so many talented welters up to middle'? To quote a poster who said 'there's this thing called the internet', why don't you use it and have a look and see how many professional fighters were active in the 40s and 50s and compare that to now?

Seriously, if you are going to make a statement that Ray Robinson couldn't win a belt in today's shark-infested welter and middle weight worlds, you're going to have to do a lot better than that last post.

Robinson was slightly taller than Leonard but more importantly he was more rangy. He had the ability to close distance in a way that was uncommon. He was explosive with those Left Hooks. Sugar Ray could be gliding backwards stop on a dime and rip 3 or 4 hooks off like nothing. Not many fighters had that ability. Roy Jones and maybe Ali in his younger days.

Robinson, eras again. I prime Robinson in the 80's? A prime Leonard in the 40's. Versus a prime Leonard in the 80's? Versus a prime Robinson in the 40's? Next thread...

It's not easy to directly compare ATGs from different eras. You have these same comparisons in all sports and for me the answer is always the same. They were ATGs in their time and there isn't much more to add.

However, if I'm pressed I would say that SRR would 2 win out of 3 fights if they fought. I tend to think that SRR was overall just 0.05% better than SRL which makes all the difference at this level.
