@ChrisJS I know you've had the pleasure of meeting both Olivares and Zarate in person plenty of times. I would love to hear what their thoughts are on Naoya Inoue and how they think they would do if they fought him in their primes.

I’ll actually be with Ruben tonight and for the next 10 days here in LA and then on the east coast. I’ll ask him.

It’s hard to say because Inoue wouldn’t make bantamweight and be the same if he was in THEIR era. We are talking about bantamweights who aren’t really bantamweights and welterweights who are middleweights today. I think Donaire, who was way beyond his peak, gave far too many problems to Inoue, which showed that a size advantage can be real and offset a lot. The rematch is how the first fight should have gone IMO. But, then again, I’m not a huge fan of defining a guy off one or two fights because the nature of sports is that guys have great nights and off nights which was more prevalent in the days of 5-6+ fights a year vs. todays 1-2 max a year.

If we consider there’s no advantage and we are getting them at their absolute best then I do consider Inoue a genuine threat for EVERY bantamweight who ever lived but an underdog vs. a few, two of which are Olivares and Zárate.

Ruben probably gives Inoue more opportunities as his style was more of a come to get you right away but it’s worth noting, he knew when to box and he is a much better boxer than given credit for. He wouldn’t have been able to put up some of the performances he did at 126 if he wasn’t. Despite the fact he had already a lot of wear and tear, wasn’t as hungry as before and had fallen in love with Tequilla and Marijuana. I think he’d box and bang enough to overcome some rough moments and beat Inoue in a thriller.

Zárate is a harder matchup due to Carlos’s temperament. Remember, Carlos never really lost at bantam. The Pintor “loss” was a crock of crap and that came at a time he couldn’t make weight, started to lose interest etc; plus, Pintor was made of stone. Zárate would have a big edge in height and reach over Inoue and he’s not gonna go full throttle until he sees openings. He was a thinking fighter. Inoue typically isn’t a big volume guy unless he smells blood so I think it would be a few rounds of fencing but the fire starts. I struggle to see many dealing with Zárate in full flow.

Fantastic post. Olivares and Zarate are genuinely hard fights for Inoue but I do think Zarate poses the more dangerous proposition for Inoue because of his size and calculated style of breaking the opponents down with precise hard shots. Olivares would also give Inoue hell no doubt about it and I can see him beating Inoue as well but I don't think it's impossible to see Inoue knocking out Olivares.

It was cool. I’ve got a bunch of events for him the next 10 days starting tonight it’s four here in So. Cal and then next week in Atlantic City. Last night was just hanging out with him. He’s very happy to be here, didn’t really get into too much.

He’s very excited to see his fans, he absolutely adores the fans and loves being stateside.

Yes, he’s doing well. Yes, both he & Zárate are great guys. Down to earth and genuine and are always smiling.
