How does the Classic Forum Rate Pacquiao in an all-time P4P sense?

I can't search for posts now, it's saying searching is disabled? Anyway, basically i picked Pac by stoppage, but not with much conviction admittedly. My reasoning was that i think Cotto is more effective using his fine educated pressure than his boxing style. Even though he can box, the fact is that he ships punches when employing that style. That's not great against Pacquiao, even if boxing may be the best option when facing him in, general terms. Then i thought that even if Cotto uses the style i think he is more effective with, the educated pressure style that is, it's not a great style to employ against Pacquiao. The only problem i had was that Cotto is bigger and remains even in hindsight, a hard man. So i picked Pacquiao on this basis.

Think about it, early on they traded, Cotto did okay, Pac kd'd him twice, Cotto started to box and Pac was able to hit him constantly.

I called it............ for once! Haha

He sure is, you know you're getting excitement when he fights, every time. Good for armchair fans as well i suppose, because he seems a nice guy as well, good image and all that.

His image, or in Manny's case his personality is half his arsenal. This guy makes Norman Vincent Peale look like a naysayer. Who was the boxer in the pre-fight run up that said Manny looks like a "happy fighter" in there? He gives you the impression that there is almost no place he'd rather be. Most fighters come from humble beginnings, but you don't get any more humble than the "boondocks" (a Philipino word, btw) than the outer islands of the Philipines. I watched some of that 24/7 stuff and the discord in Manny's camp did have me wondering. But whatever this cat uses to keep himself centered they should bottle it.

It was an excellent performance tonight against an at best contender level welterweight (historically speaking of course - I know he is one of the best in this mug era) but I got all the confirmation I needed tonight that Mayweather will school him.

Pacquiao for all his speed, throws some pretty basic combos which a great defensive fighter will see coming and dodge and he remains as he was at the lower weights eminently hittable. A gassing Cotto was outboxing him in spots late in the fight which is bad news for his prospects against Mayweather.

The only question for me is whether Floyd will have the balls to put his rep on the line and face Pac. If I was him I'd be jumping at the chance after tonight, but I an't Floyd.

As for Pac and where he sits p4p, I'll leave it until after he's done to think about, but as far as his h2h ability goes, I still think he gets beaten by most guys around his weight (126-135) in the top 50 p4p.

You're right that the combos are basic but it's got the job done. I rate this win personally ut that's just mine. He is a force of nature i'm keeping that in reserve.

I've got the same feeling more or less. But Paq has surprised before.

The discord was between Manny's fitness trainer and an advisor, an actual off camera physical confrontation. Also between manny and Freddie Roach! Freddie wanted to leave the outer Philipines, it was Typhoon season and flooding and he was afraid they'd get stuck. Came down to an ultimatum that he would leave without his fighter. Tell ya the truth, would anybody put it past freddie Roach to fabricate that dissention to give the Cotto camp a false sense of security?

    Sure has.

He's had the right guys in front of him lately for his style to work effectively though, i.e. guys with average to poor head movement and defense (Hatton, Cotto, Diaz) or guys that for other reasons haven't been able to move effectively (shells of DLH & Morales). Just don't be surprised if Mayweather does beat him fairly comfortably and please don't everyone start putting Floyd in the top 10 p4p afterwards!

I'm willing to bear the egg on my face if Pac does beat Floyd though. Bookmark this thread, if you want to see me humbled :good

I favour Mayweather heavily too, but I consider you still lowball Pacquiao. He might throw basic combinations, but the word "sharp" doesn't really cover it, he throws hard punches extremely fast. This ex-flyweight just did what Mosley was unable to do, basic punches and all.

Pacquiao's a throwback, worthy of being compared to the all-time greats and the best of the old-timers.

Haha, yeah agree with everything you've jsut said but i still rate the wins, the weight jumping is big. But nar SS, i wouldn't bookmark this thread to see you humbled, you're a legend!

I've always thought that Mayweather would beat Pac though, and at times i've just thought it would be a schooling. I've got to say though, that even though Mayweather is a much better boxer than Cotto, last night was the first time i've seen any evidence that Pacquiao has a real chance against Mayweather. It was the most complete performance i've seen of his, although he's not an outright complete fighter in my perception. Sure has improved though.

I agree with this. Its getting very hard for me to find 15-20 fighters to put ahead of him.
