Hey JT! Yes - I've been taking some time out (pseudo-sabbatical). I do that now and then and it takes me down quite diverse areas of study. I've popped in, on the very rare occasion, to see what was occurring and read some insightful posts. It's surprising where the time goes, in between visits, but always good to see the familiar posters on my return.
The thing is tho, with all due respect to the man, Fury wasn't fighting any of those legends. But, saying that, I do think he fits in, to a degree, with the 70 s lot. He's above the contenders, Quarry, Bugner, Foster, Shavers etc, he's beating Norton but then it gets harder. Prime Foreman. Let's see, maybe Fury could out grit him, try and take him deep and tire him out. Frazier. If Fury meets Joe pre Ali, then it's an awful match for Fury. Joe was a beast and I see him pounding out a decision and maybe dropping him Tyson. Ali V Fury. Ahhh, I call it Ali but don't ask me to bet on it.
Dwight Muhammad Qawi said in an interview recently that a lot of these heavyweights today aren’t really that skillful…they just know how to use their size to their advantage ( Fury is different)
I agree you don't really see athleticism, fluidity, combinations, anymore in Heavyweight division. And for me that's what turns me off it. Like put it this way i give Fury credit for his victories. But would I ever rewatch any of fights ? No not all.
He may win one or two while canpaigning in the 70's, but also might get smacked around very hard vs Ali (he never beats Ali under any circumstances), Frazier (he'd land the left hook that Whyte threw last night but missed badly), Foreman, Norton. He most likely beats Quarry, definetly Leon Spinks.
In fairness I think it would depend on exactly WHO he was fighting back then. I can see Ali’s speed and skill creating problems for him but do you think Foreman or Frazier would just walk over him ?
I think Frazier wears him out like a cheap suit over a long fight. Foreman? this would be interesting as George would cut the ring off and Fury would have to fight.
Tall for their weight lanky guys with big power can happen in any weight class. Tommy Hearns anyone? Just go off weight. I could see a SHW class as being a good idea, although the problem then is that normal HWs just bulk up to make SHW.
Frazier mows him over, it might last 8. George would get a bit frustrated early, but once Fury is down George was a HUGELY better finisher than Deontay. George in 5. Holmes would fatten his face up, but it would be a fairly tough fight for Larry, might have to take a Majority decision.
Would Fury really need to worry about fleeing from a man who is six inches shorter and fifty lbs lighter with stamina issues and poor defense ? I’m not so sure
