People fail to realize that Ward is the prototype of the ideal boxer. He has always been levels above his best opponent. Kovalev is a great opponent. He is definitely no Golovkin type boxer who hides behind his promoter's skirt. He is a real live opponent for Ward and probably Ward's biggest test to date. Both fighters bring outstanding skills, but I believe the difference will be highlighted in ring generalship and effective punching. Kovalev has a different style than Froch, but Ward is no Agnew either.
An one armed Ward defeated Froch. A two armed rusty Ward defeats Kovalev. "...and NEW LHW champion.....Annndre "S.O.G." Warrrrrrrrd"!
Go red white and blue hey! But all jokes aside Ward is a peculiar character. During the vs Paul Smith post fight presser they asked Smith about Ward's power. While Smith was explaining that Ward is a solid puncher Andre couldn't help himself and blurted out "Froch said I punch like a feather duster"! Somebody needs to remind Ward what year it is and its time to look forward not backward. I'm really starting to wonder about the state of mind of Andre Ward.
Why fans place so much emphasis on power, I don't understand. I mean, everyone loves knockouts, but who wants to see strings of knockouts by mismatch. No doubt that Kovalev has power. His record proves it. However, look at the level of competition Kovalev has faced. He beat Bernard Hopkins decisively, but the fact that BHOP was 50 years old can't be ignored. Kovalev was clearly the better fighter better he and Pascal, but Pascal is IMHO, at least a half level to a level below Carl Froch in boxing ability. Pascal is like the Bika of the LHW division. Ward doesn't punch with as much power as Kovalev, but as Smith and other past Ward opponents have pointed out, Ward punches very hard and extremely accurate. His newly healed right hand/arm broke Smith's nose. Something no other opponent has done. Had the fight continued, it would only have been a matter of time before Ward got the KO. Many Anti-Ward fans whine about the Ward-Smith match up while ignoring Kovalev - Agnew. Comparing the two fights, Ward definitely beat up Smith more impressively than Kovalev beat up Agnew. Agnew got up and was alright while Smith was rushed to the hospital for facial surgery. :smoke
Wards biggest problem is actually Krushers footwork, and predilection to take steps back when people try to rush inside. All the while throwing hard leather that cant be ignored. See BHop KD. I say biggest problem, because Kovalev does have a great and insanely hard jab that he also likes to throw to the body making outboxing him at range a daunting prospect. Ward will really have to get inside and make him uncomfortable, but that itself is an extremely tall order. That being said, I sure don't expect Ward to have no plan and be helpless. But given his attributes and how he matches up with Kovalev, its a tough fight and Kovalev is also the best guy he will have faced. Props to Ward for taking the fight, its one of the few i'll be happy to dish out $$$ for.
yep@uppercut artist these guys don't really wanna see ward/kova....their internet egos will be deflated
