Hamed was equally as big a star to boxing fans, but he wasn't as well known to non boxing fans because he fought all his prime years on Sky, whereas Benn vs Eubank 1 was on free to air national TV.

As Jel said, 16.5 million people watched Eubank vs Benn 1. The UK population was c.57 million in 1990. Not considering young children and people without access to TV, over a third of the country watched it. Nowhere near that amount ever tuned in live to watch Naz fight, or, I suspect, any boxing match since.
