Yeah he dropped twice in their first encounter, and even more impressively in their second fight lifted Thompson clean off his feet with an uppercut A 210lb ripped Thompson
I was laughing my arse off when people were giving him criticism in his FIRST fight. Friggin' laughable.
It wouldn't surprise me if he had a big falling out with his dad whose ego will probably get in the way at some point.
Obviously way too early to say, but I am amazed at people saying he looked sloppy and ordinary in his pro debut. That is absolute bollocks and is purely down to his name and reacting against hype. If he was a total unknown who you saw making his debut having heard from some inside guys that he was a real talent there is no chance you would come away from that debut saying "sloppy" or "ordinary". He was quick, put punches together nicely with good technique and showed a very nice jab. He looked fluid and not too upright which is a far cry from how he looked only 18 months ago. Hopefully he gets a decent standard of opponent so that he actually learns from fights and can work on flaws and so on. It would be a waste if he just gets human punching bags for fight after fight. I would like to see him back out again fairly soon as at this stage he should be fighting regularly, with at least 6 fights a year.
His name doesn't put him above criticsm. His shot selection was poor for me - somebody who has never had a pro fight before you give me the 'first pro fight' line.
He had the type of opponent where its difficult to conclude anything more than 'he's talented'. But we sort of had hints about that prior to this fight. The guy he was fighting was a punching bag, one that barely moved at that. Can't even call him a journeyman, journeymen are supposed to present something to an upcoming fighter. Still, he seemed fairly gifted athletically. Above average handspeed/well above average at domestic level.
No but his name is drawing more criticism. Give me an example of a pro debut you found impressive. Because he looked a damn sight more composed and technically sound than Degale or Khan for example. The only fair criticism is that he should have gone to the body more, but his opponent was totally covered up and how many fighters these days even go to the body repeatedly, let alone in their pro debut looking to impress? He would have got the opportunity to land more and pick nicer shots if the other guy came to fight and not roll up into a ball. I have no issue with someone finding faults, because that is to be expected and that is what he should be working on in these fights. But "ordinary" or "sloppy" suggests that he looks the same as the average pro making their debut and I'd love to see some videos in comparison. Because he clearly looked to be more talented than the mass of guys out there who become journeymen.
One criticism Grant made on another occasion which I agree with was his ring IQ seemed a bit questionable. It shouldn't have taken his dad to point out that guy had a tight guard but left his body open. But thats pretty harsh on debut, maybe he'll open up and relax and begin to spot these things as he progresses.
probably will, I really hope eubank snr isn't as involved in post fight interviews as he was in jnrs first fight. I felt a bit sorry for jnr to be honest, they didn't need to put his dad on the mic between rounds, that was ridiculous. I also think they were pretty dismissive of jnr in the post fight interview, choosing to talk to snr far more. The kid needs to find his own way and snr getting so involved is only going to **** him off. Its far too early to praise or critisie him right now. Does anyone know when he's next due to fight?
Yeah I'd go along with this^^ The thing that stood out to me is how athletically gifted he looked. He looked strong physically and looks like he has a bit of a dig. Speed seems okay to good, and he looks to have enough technical ability to compliment his obvious physical gifts. If his chin anywhere near as good as his dads, and he doesn't have stamina problems, or lacks mental fortitude under pressure, then I think he's a good prospect, although as you said its hard to gauge based who he's fought (debut), looks promising though.
The challenge for Jr. is in knowing how to become a chameleon. A Leopard who can change his spots. In his upcoming ground building fights i wanna see, does he rely on a pretty dollar bill all the time or does he have some loose change when he needs it (particularly in the pocket). The signs are good, but too early to say either way let alone anoint him (i see my man Atberry as already jumped the gun, surprise, surprise).
No worse than proclaiming him a sure fire future world champ on the back of watching 15 minutes light sparring.
