How far could Kenny Egan have gone as a pro?

There needs to be something done about that open scoring ****.

Obviously they brought it in because of the Roy Jones scandal but there was no need to ruin the sport in the process. Amateur boxing doesn't even resemble boxing when you watch it in the Olympics. More a cross between a wrestling match, fencing and the 10,000 metres.

 

Ireland left the commonwealth so I dunno if Irish boxers can fight for the title

 

I think he was either born or lived in one of the caribbean commonwealth countries for a while. Might be wrong though.....

 

I'm pretty sure he did live in the Caribbean for a period, whether that made him eligible I don't know.
Anyway a great loss.

Back on topic, i take it there's no chance he'll turn pro after 2012/if he doesn't get in? Elite amateurs can reach world title at pro in 3-4 years so he could maybe do something stll

 

You never know to be honest.

I mean boxing is all he probably knows and I mean he had a decent number being an amateur boxer and small time celebrity and was probably making decent money as an amateur. But if he doesnt get to the olympics and that all fades away then there is every opportunity that he might try his hand at the pro's for 4-5 years....

 

I would tend to agree with most posters here, I don't think Egan had what it took to be a top pro but I reckon he might have got to Euro level contention if he was hyped and fed tomato cans for a while. He got some decent offers to go pro, some US based promoter flew him over to Vegas and wined him and dined him at either the Calzaghe - Hopkins or the Calzaghe - Jones fight.

He was making decent money with the Irish sports grants and he probably got a few quid from his cringe worthy Mace ads and I assume he was promised a decent few quid to stay amateur till London. He said himself that he reckons his style suits the amateur game.

I reckon Leo Messi is right that he might turn pro some time in the not so distant future as he is no longer the undisputed dominant figure at 81kg in Ireland and mightn't qualify for London.

Serious questions over his dediction, didn't turn up for an international in Dublin against the States and Brendan Fitz had to take his place and didn't bother turning up for the pro-am show that was on before the Dunne - Cordoba fight. He advised viewers on a recent Irish chat show that he suffered from alcoholism and regularly attended meetings. To be honest I don't think his drinking was out of control but it was probably on the excessive side for an elite amateur fighter.

I'd say he could draw well in the States.

 

Regarding his drinking problems. I saw him at a darts tournament in city west about 18months ago(or possibly the year before)and he was fairly drunk, not hammered as in sloppy in the corner but he was very merry and was going around to different tables having a bit of banter with total randomers, he was even over at our table for a bit and nobody seemed to know him there. Then he got into a bit of an altercation with a table of young lads over I dont know what. Basically he was taunting them and vice versa, calling each other out for fights. Eventually he was either told to leave the premises or was convinced to leave the premises, either way I saw him being ushered out the exit by security and he didnt return.

Not saying he's an alco or anything, but that was the only time i've seen him outside of boxing and he was drunk and involved in trouble.

Anyway, he seems to have cleaned up his act now...

 

Funnily enough, I heard that story but the version I heard was greatly exagerated.

Yeah, he definately seems to have got involved in a few regretable incidents but I just get the impression that he was sailing on the post olympic fame wave. Having a few too many, having banter and getting involved in an altertaction wouldn't be unique to Irish males so I'll let him off the hook on that.

My own impression is that the cat was out of the bag that Egan had been on the tear around town and he dealt with it the prudent way - addressed it publicly and took responsibility - it's a good way to stop the rumor mill.

As you said - he seems to have cleaned up his act now.

I was the next table over so I had ring side seats to what was going on and in fairness to Egan the table was full of little wannabe hardmen pricks, I was hoping he would knock one of them out.The worst it got was pushing and shoving , stuff being thrown and a lot of angry verbals going back and forth....

 

yeah thats when he lost the plot....

He was supposed to be fighting in Ireland that weekend if I remember correctly ha ha...

 

The version I heard was second hand about twenty times over, I heard that Egan was hammered and was trying it on with some bird and then started a fight with her fella and one of the bouncers over powered him and threw him out.

 

There were some strange rumours flying around about the American antics too!

 

That could well of happened too in fairness.

 

I remember hearing that story from my cousin. I thought she was telling lies.
