Team Lomanchenko turning down ol' man Pacquiao tells me all I need to know about the confidence in his abilities.
how far away is he? lets see, he's 14-1, so he needs to win 36 more fights without losing... then we shall compare... personally I think Loma has 4-5 fights left in him... he's been boxing for so long, he's burned out... he even said in an interview recently he wants to retire soon.
Not a bad comparison. I think Loma may have surpassed Floyd with the few years he's been active when Floyd was Loma's age but overall, I give it to Floyd. Loma still has quite a bit to do to be on Floyd's level.
Excellent post. In terms of his naturally ability and technical skill, the 130lbs version of Loma is very much in the discussion with Floyd. Head to head at that weight, I think Floyd's length and ring IQ would have enabled him to eke out a hotly contested split decision. No shame in that, however. People forget how explosive Floyd's offense was at SFW. In fact, it could be reasonably argued that Floyd is one of the very top 130lbers in the history of the sport. Conversely, I have always believed Loma beats Pac at 130. Alas Loma's frame and age all but preclude the kind of division hopping success Floyd enjoyed.
These types of threads are an invitation to argue (I don’t mean that as a criticism). I just try to stay out of it. I don’t like comparing active fighters to retired guys. It’s better to wait until they are both retired. That’s also an invitation to argue but maybe not as much because the body of work of each fighter is already set in stone. Loma will have a hard time matching up with lots of the all time greats because he became a pro so much later. He also has a lot of miles on the odometer because of his long amateur career. While that doesn’t mean much if we are just talking pro careers, it’s a legitimate fact. I enjoy watching Loma fight much more than Floyd later in his career. That’s just my subjective opinion. Young Floyd was a special fighter and was very tough. I watched every one of his early fights, even if I was rooting against him.
He will never equal or even get close to Floyd's achievements because he's not going to win 35 more time, or 25 or 20 more times. Dude is a couple years away from retirement based on his own words, and fights 2x a year. So the comparison is a 20-1 record vs a 49-0 record (not including the McGregor farce and IDC what Boxrec says. He started a pro career too late, and I don't care if he had 2,000 amateur wins; we're talking a pro vs pro comparison.
Honest question. I admit that I don't follow the Am's at all. Loma started his pro career late, 24 I think it was. Does that mean in his 396 wins he fought teenagers while he was a gold medalist in his 20's?
Loma was almost 26 when he turned pro And no he was not beating up on teenagers In fact, everyone he fought in his first Olympics, World Amateur championships, and European championships was older than him The respective years of birth of Loma and all of the opponents he fought in major championships as a senior amateur Loma born in 1988 2007 World Championships 1987 1985 1977 1985 1982 1986 2008 Olympics 1986 1985 1982 1986 1983 2008 European Championships 1986 1987 1985 1986 2009 World Championships N/A 1989 1990 1990 1987 2011 World Amateur Championships 1990 1992 1988 1991 1984 1989 2012 Olympics 1991 1993 1989 1984
Names worth mentioning. Loma has GRJ, Linares, Campbell, Rigoblin, Walters. Floyd has Canelo, Judah, Castillo, Pac, Cotto, Mosley, Jmm, Hatton, Ndou, Corrales, Manfredy, Jesus Chavez, Hernandez, Judah, Maidana and DLH. How are their resume's close?
