How far should you extend your punches when shadowboxing?

I have some confusion about this. Most trainers I've had have basically said "all the way out". Which is fine. But I got some advice today in the gym from a trainer who seemed very intent on me over-extending my arms to the point that I felt like they'd come out of the socket! Is there any rule of thumb for this?

That's what I was thinking. I think he just wanted to highlight the principle that you should put your body into the punches, and turn with your shots. Admittedly, I don't turn all the way with shots, which can be good or bad I guess.

But I've noticed with his fighters, that they all bend forward in stance...almost like a Joe-Frazierish thing but with their hands up higher. Maybe it's a Philly thing, but I've gotten advice from other trainers (one of which was Troy Browning, who gave me pointers for a few days) to keep your head back, put your weight on your backfoot, and not leave your skull out to get hit.

    I guess that's just a trainer-to-trainer thing?

Either your trainer is part spider or all ***git. Either way, he knows **** all. Don't listen to him. Never overextend.

i wouldnt suggest you over extent your punches but suggest you fully extend so you can get use to the movements of the punches and so your muscle memory starts to know the proper movements. Also work on defence when shadow boxing. Shadow boxing is about getting the proper feel for your body. If you cant use proper technique while shadow boxing there is no way you will use proper technique when the pressure is on.

The old trainers used to say "don't punch at his face, punch through his face" ie hard enough to go through. That is good advice to remember when hitting the heavy bag since it absorbs the shock. But while shadow boxing it leads more to injuries than it helps punching power. Also, shadow boxing is a good opportunity to practice keeping your balance when you miss a punch. So don't over-extend.

    1. concentrate on speed have hollow hands and practice throwing combos and snapping punches.
    2. not sure what you mean by extending your arms, but you are suppose to be practicing punches, throw your jab and throw your straight right with a hollow hand.
    3. concentrate on keeping your hands up.
    4. think about your feet.

if you need to practice punching use a bag, shadow punching is for technique.
