The Holyfield of the turn of the century I could definitely see Ike outpointing. The Holyfield of the mid-nineties I think would have had too much bottle and been too crafty a fox for him. Ray Mercer also fought Lewis in a phonebox, like a 16 x 16 ring, which was down to Don King and much smaller than the usual. If Lewis is the champ, which at this point he would be, he's not going to be giving **** like that up to Ike. Therefore the reach is much more of an issue. Not to mention Ike never had a jab like Mercer. Or, like I said, ever fought a back-foot long range boxer with a heavy punch like Lewis.
Right. Plus, there were all those kirk johnson sparring stories and if Ike couldn't deal with that jab, what about the Lewis jab and toolset?
*I agree... Ibeabuchi was tuff! I say it all the time... i'd feel more than confident putting Ibeabuchi, Bowe, young Tua, Lennox and either Klitsko against any heavyweight in histry...
Not really ... perhaps before making such a definitive statement we should compare them at like kind points in their careers after 20 fights ...
Based on what performance ? To make that statement of an undefeated fighter after 20 fights who proved an iron chin, great stamina and a huge heart is absurd. At worst he gets an incomplete. After 20 fights Holyfield was just stepping into the ring against a badly faded "Not so Quick" Tillis ... Lewis was fighting immortal Derek Williams ... just a silly statement ... What Ike did prove was a world class chin, terrific stamina, very good power , speed and a heck of a jab ... not bad ...
Based on posts like this. Based on some people who think he would have changed history and that he was good enough to beat atgs.
I always thought Ike would've been the type to capture a belt or possibly even get on top of the division, but that his reign wouldn't be a long one. We never got to see how he'd fight against a good bigger man. Because of that I don't give him the benefit of the doubt vs Lewis or the Klitschko's, but we'll never really know if he was good enough to pull off a win or two (or three) off of them. My initial reaction is that he wouldn't have, but all 3 have lost to worse fighters, so who knows? Regardless, I don't think he'd ever have more than a few successful defenses, if that. He did well for the short time he was fighting though, so I give him credit for that.
