I just warmed up for the Pacquiao vs. Margarito fight by watching Shane Mosley beat seven shades of **** out of Margo. One thing that struck me, was that Margarito looked ridiculously slow in that fight. There are many factors in play here: * that Margarito was weight drained * that Shane was just that much faster and made Margarito LOOK slow * that Shane, strangely, had a reach advantage against Margarito * that Margarito was distracted and put off his game by the hand wrap controversy * etc. The real question is this - for you who know Margarito better than I do: Is Margarito going to be much faster against Pacquiao than he was against Mosley? If so, please explain why you think so - I would really like to know. Because if he's not... he won't even catch Pac.
he's better trained this is the kind of speed you can expect out of Margarito [yt]gBUEaHouErQ[/yt] obviously, he'll always be slow, but even he has off nights.
He's got under average speed for a world champion in those weight classes, imo. Always has. If he weren't smarter offensively than people think he is, he never would've compensated for that lack of speed and beaten the guys he's beaten, even if they duct taped actual bricks to his ****ing hands. Of course if they did that, the bricks would slow him down even more, but...
margarito has always been really slow. the fact that he's fighting one of (if not the) the fastest guys of all time is going to make him look even slower.
and if you watched that fight you'll know that mosely did exactly what cotto didnt...that mosely did what pac doesnt like to do. that is throw and tie up. cotto boxed margo's ears off for 6-7 rounds but he refused to tie up. he was being backed up...would throw backing up or sliding out which took pop off his shots. cotto never once tied margo up. mosely did just the opposite. he walked at him, threw power shots, which had full force on them b/c he was coming forward instead of backing up, and would then tie margo up. pac can do what cotto didnt b/c pac won't tire out. that being said...margo's speed has nothing to do with why he is where he is. he can be awkward and he's a bull of a fighter. if you fight like cotto did you better not wilt. pac won't...or hasnt given any prior indication of the contrary. mosely just had a great gameplan and executed it perfectly.
Yes, true. Cotto isn't very quick, but Pac definitely is, so I don't think that backing up would even be the same with Pacquiao as with Cotto. What I'm saying is that regardless of other tactics, Margarito must be faster against Pacquiao, if he's going to have a chance to win. I just wonder whether he is. Bigger. Older. But better trained?
Well how fast you gonna be when you load up almost every punch and come around the houses with your punches at times?
Cotto had a noticeable speed advantage over Margo, even if he lost (to a fighter with loaded gloves). Pac made Cotto look slow. So you do the math. Pac's speed compared to Margo's speed will be similar to Roy Jones' speed vs. John Ruiz's speed in their fight.
i just don't think margo needs to be faster than he is. cutting off the ring, absorbing punishment to get inside and throw a well timed left hook to the body left uppercut combo. i just don't think he'll be able to do it and its not b/c of lack of speed. i just don't think he's prepared for what he's about to see. a skull dragging by mosely, a prolonged absence, and a less than inspired comeback ud doesnt prepare you for manny pac. but for margo, its cutting off the ring and getting in close. speed of punches is much less important than that.
If this is one of his good nights speedwise and Cotto is beating him to the punch, they may have to carry him out in a stretcher because thats dangerously slow against Manny.
