How funny is it that the 160 "champ" could drain the 154 champ

Cotto already said he wants to do a 155 lb. cw for that fight. That seems fair, that's the weight Canelo has been fighting at.

 

Would be a farce and a meaningless fight at 155.

 

I disagree. The CW won't effect either guy. It will be a PPV fight though, so anyone can easily skip it if they feel it's a meaningless fight.

 

Doesn't seem like an unfair or lopsided choice to me - would suit both fighters.

I don't care whether this fight carries a MW title or not either, it's just a good fight to look forward to.

 

How about a 160 limit ... but weigh in at noon the day of the fight?

 

How about just leave it plain old 160lb, no frills, no ifs ands or buts - and if either or both of them want to come in well shy of that (like Cotto elected to, against Geale), fine.

 

Why wouldn't Cotto allow that for the Geale fight?

Canelo can make that in his sleep and its still considered a mw fight because it will be contested at the minimum weight for a mw fight 155...bhop was the mw champ at 160 for oscar and he weighed 155-56 i believe and oscar weighed around the same, so i dont see an issue on the matter... it wont be below 155, ill tell you that doe..

 

Ok, so let's have a "champion" who wants to fight at 155... fight a "never fought at middleweight" contender for the lineal middleweight championship! :good

If Cotto doesn't feel he is at a natural size disadvantage what does it matter what weight they fight at? They are both going to come in over 160lbs (does anyone really believe Cotto is under 160 in the ring these days) so why not just make it at 160 and save them both the hassle of cutting weight? Even if they both weigh-in at 160 exactly they will have cut a little weight.

The only reason for a catch-weight is if someone (probably Cotto) is worried about the other guy being bigger.

 

FWIW I read an article today that said that Cotto and Canelo were basically the same size and any weight limit would be "fair"...but really, Canelo is about 10lbs heavier isn't he? Anything below 160lb suits Cotto as he is the smaller man, and the lighter the better for him.

 

How about we let the ****ing fighter negotiate their ****ing fight
