how good do you think his technical skills are? i think Cotto was the first fight where i was truly impressed by his technical skills, especially with his counters. a far cry from the one-two artist he used to be.
His technical skills arent the best. He punches hard and has very fast hands and feet, but you often see him in bad position and his defense isnt the greatest, but that speed makes up for a lot of those shortcomings. Roach tries to compensate for some those mistakes and his lack of height with angle attacks and combination punching which offset counters. I think Cotto would have had more success against Pac with Steward in his corner myself, because Cotto can have good technical skills when he tries.
Not great, but vastly improved. Superb balance and superb punching with fantastic variety (now). I agree that his counter-punching is much improved.
He has been showing lots of better stuff, offensively he's a technical force. He's been blocking shots better, feinting and drawing people into counters, throwing incredible combinations, and setting his feet to throw powerful single shots. His defense is still based on speed, he doesn't move his head enough although his parrying and blocking and footwork are much improved
It's like asking how good were Ali's technical skills...same thing with Pac...it dosen't matter really..he compensates for any deficits he may have in tech skill with his speed/power ratio..his footwork..the general dynamism of his makeup.
Pac has improved considerably. There is a video of how Pac was timing Cotto's jab and hook with his straight left. It was very impressive.
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ui-7QZLuDD0[/ame] Very good video. These fans work hard for their man. It's a terrifying punch. But, here we are again, he leans all the way in with it much of the time - he has to, because of the differentials in size, i guess, but it is there to be exploited by...say...a superb technical counter-puncher of similar size...
That is actually a good thing, he is moving his head to the side and away from his opponents 'line of fire', it can be exploited but 9/10 it is a good practise.
I agree with the off-centre thing, but it's not as though he shows variety, and the most important thing, the thing that worries me about it, all his weight is on his front foot when he throws, often his trailing foot comes off the deck all the way.
it is surely not his forte i think with his style he can get away with lackluster technical skills:think
Tough to tag him, but if someone good enough to read him can feint him in and then drill him with a counter punch, you're visiting the deck if your lunging in on one leg and you're likely to be very hurt by that punch. Still, nobody has had him yet, and Pacquiao sets a rythym. Just because he does something like this with a more robotic Cotto doesn't mean it's going to work the same way with Mayweather. Incidently, these two have a recorded reach of the same size.
