of course Dwight would've handled both, I have no doubt in my mind. I also think Spinks, Roy, Virgil Hill and quite a few others would've had their way with both. In terms of modern day, I think they are heads and tails above everyone else in the LHW division.
I agree with the thread starter. Their fights together have looked world class level but not era defining elite level.
Pound for pound fighters rarely have good fights against each other? Pacquiao vs Morales, Pacquiao vs Marquez, Morales vs Barrera, Leonard vs Hagler, Leonard vs Hearns, Leonard vs Duran, Hagler vs Hearns, Sanchez vs Gomez, Pryor vs Arguello, Jofre vs Harada, Robinson vs Fullmer, Robinson vs Basilio, Moore vs Marciano, Marciano vs Charles, Marciano vs Louis, Basilio vs Fullmer, Robinson vs LaMotta, Pep vs Saddler, Louis vs Conn, Armstrong vs Ross, etc.
The problem here is Ward, he's a spoiler. He's not going to have aesthetically pleasing fights with anybody.
I saw a similar fight involving Floyd Patterson's kid brother who was losing the fight until he unleased a barrage of blows to his opponent's groin. After that the other fighter wasn't the same and Floyd's brother took command and won by TKO.
Kovalev was extremely cautious with Bernard and kept a safe distance never allowing Bernard to get on the inside effectively. So he definitely knows the importance of distance. Suddenly against Ward he is totally oblivious to the nuances of keeping proper distance? LOL! What do these promoters think we are-lobotomized? Also, what's with the theatrics of trainers suddenly badmouthing their fighters right after the fight? Trying to add ridiculously obvious wrestling- style drama? Might as well have the Undertaker as the ref and Hulk Hogan as one of the judges! Go the whole hog! Wonder what kind of horse and poney show they have planned for the Canelo GGG circus.
Ward is definitely better than Virgil Hill. He would be Jones' best 175 opponent pretty easily if he were around back then, but I have him behind Jones. Kovalev doesn't stand out as much so there are some fighters he'd be evenly matched with or an underdog against. With Ward, it's a pretty short list.
2-0 or 1-1. Ward showed the skill, adaptability, and intangibles. Kovalev happened to land a big punch in the first fight which made things close.
Well yea he's a puncher. When a puncher lands his big punch it's hard to beat him. Kovalev is the real deal, make no mistake. If he was a bum then why is Ward's KO victory over Kova the best win of the decade so far hands down?
