People are saying that Calzaghe should not have moved up the P4P rankings for beating a shot Roy Jones Jnr ? But everything is relative, if Jones was sill capable of beating every other Light-heavy weight in the division or every other Light-heavy outside the top 5 in the division {Jones is currently ranked 6th by Ring after the Calzaghe fight} it still should rank as a good win for Calzaghe ! If Jones was a brillant boxer 10 years ago and is now only 50% of what he was, that still equates to one fine boxer, and for Calzaghe to dominate the 6th best boxer in his weight class away from home is a good win {everything is relative} The Jones that fought Calzaghe was actually much better than i had anticipated, i honestly think that version of Roy Jones last Saturday night would have beaten a lot of top class boxers, Joe Calzaghe fought one of his best fights {although he could have got away with performing one level below his best } if Jones Jnr was to fight Hopkins next, and performed like he did against Calzaghe don't be surprised if Jones wins !!! Calzaghe was excellent against Jones, terrible against Hopkins, don't give me styles makes fights ? Hopkins makes everybody look bad ? i know that is generally true, but i have seen virtually every fight Calzaghe has had and i can tell you he was bad against Hopkins and good against Jones, even taking everything into consideration .{styles etc} To answer my own question, a 50% Jones Jnr was very GOOD on the night against Calzaghe and would have beaten virtually every other boxer in that weight class.
Jones Attributes Power- 8 Speed- 10 everything else.....damn near zero he's pretty much as shot as he can be, and you say that beating a #6 contender should move you up? ok then... JMM beat the Champion of the LW division and Pacman beat a Champion of the LW division so either way, based off of they're last fights alone it's still Pacman JMM Calz
Beating the 6th best contender should move you up the rankings if you are very close to the boxers above you { in tennis and golf rankings the competitors earn points, if you are just below somebody eg 1 point behind and have a fairly good win, you may well move up to No1 ?} But if Pacman and Marquez are a long way ahead of Calzaghe thats a different story, the question that would then, be needed to be asked, is how come they are so far ahead of an excellent unbeaten champion when between them they have lost several times ?
He was okay. For a 39 year old "shot" fighter, fighting against a top 5 p4p fighter who throws 100 punches a round, he did well. Still, he has no legs or movement (for a consistent period of time, anyways). Roy never just stood in front of a guy and blocked punches using his guard, not firing back with anything (which is what he did for pretty much every round from the 3rd onwards). The first time he really started to do this was in Tarver 1. There's just no way a prime Roy lets Calzaghe off the hook in that first round. With energy and jump in his legs, consistant movement and workrate (and this is being very ungenerous to a Prime Roy, but still); a Prime Roy's most obvious two ingredients would ALWAYS be just to much for any version of Calzaghe (and I think that was proven in the first round of their fight, to be honest) - and that's speed and power. He'd simply control the fight from the get-go
BTW in case anyone hasn't noticed this is a debate that has carried over from another thread. This has nothing to do with Roy Jones' performance, this is actually the OP trying to make a case for Joe Calzaghe to move into the N0.1 spot P-4-P based off a victory over the aforementioned shot Roy (obviously didn't get the point in the other thread when his argument was battered to nothing). NOT A ****ING CHANCE. Some posters may have Joe at No.1 already; I don't agree with that, but I ain't gonna argue with you. However, I think even you would agree that a win over Jones does not warrant any major upward movement in Joe's status. It was a money fight, pure and simple. Also, LHW isn't the deepest division in boxing. Having Roy listed at 6 pre-fight doesn't say much: its pretty **** poor outside the top 5.
Was he though ? or was he simply fighting bums back then ? his only 2 good wins are pot shot victorys againt hopkins and toney other than that wtf did he ever do ?
He performed about as well as I expected. I didn't see him knocking down Joe, but I thought a few rounds would be closer. The thing that has been extremely apparent in all roys last three winning efforts is his stamina is terrible. His speed and power are still good, as are a lot of other things, but he can't let his hands go properly. He can only fight in spurts before needing a lengthy defensive breather. Against a swarmer lilke Calzaghe he was always going to be outmatched.
Unify..... win the heavyweight title.... come back down and defend it..... Virgil hill (broke his rib with one shot)..... played pro basketball and defended his title in the same day..... the good old 7 left hook combo..... olympic gold (got robbed but was given gold years later)......a good long run as Ring P4P #1..... and lets not forget when he beat up that 40 year old cop:bbb
Don't forget the hands-behind-the-back KO of Glen Kelly; to hell with the calibre of opponent that was just an amazing punch. [yt]gexazLr6pSY&feature=related[/yt]
I absolutely hate RJJ but as a fighter you have to give him the respect he deserves... he was great once but that was a long time ago. RJJ fought Clazaghe like the #6 ranked LHW that he was, good but not great. When he came back from HW the starch was gone from him because of the drain, against Calzaghe it was age. No, beating this version of RJJ does not warrant a jump over Pacquiao or JMM in the P4P rankings.
James Toney said it right. He said Jones was scared to throw punches which in addition to his diminished reflexes made him lose pretty convincingly IMO.
