Randy Couture is undoubtably one of the greats in his sport..but that record?? I think on paper that is poor..but it seems MMA fighters all rack up lots of losses. Boxers or the elite boxers often end their career with losses you can count on 1 hand with over 50 fights. How is this? Please dont get me wrong here...I respect Randy and acknowledge he's a classy guy and very likeable. I am just trying to open discussion on the reasons MMA guys have so many more losses on their records? Clearly that is undeniable. Randy did EXACTLY what I expected him to do on saturday night. I would always back the MMA guy over a boxer in the octagon. Same as I would always back the boxer in a boxing ring. But if you heard of a boxer with a record of 18 wins and 10 losses you would consider him a bum.
Unlike boxers.. MMA don't pad their records. It's nearly impossible, not to mention with so many ways to win and pull fights outta you're ass (Takedowns, submissions, etc). Nice try though.
The win-loss record thing is different in boxing and MMA. Usually at the top level in boxing a loss takes you back to the end of the line and sets u back with fans calling you exposed and hypejob on the forums. In MMA since the best are usually fighting the best losses are only a step or two back before a couple of wins put you back as #1 contender. Couture might have a lot of losses but his resume is stacked. He has a de la hoya-esque resume.
MMA especially UFC has the best mma fighter in the world. Just about every fighter in ufc are former wrestling champion or bjj champion etc. They can't just pick some dude selling crack on the street and fight in the ufc.
Exactly.. Their isn't an abundance of cans who make a career outta losing, fighting for a paycheck a few times a year or every other year, readily available for those breaking into the sport. Just look at the pro debuts of top boxers.. Olympic gold medalist Muhammad Ali makes his debut against a guy who was 15-9 and lost his last 6 fights, RJJ makes his against a guy who was 4-14, and James Toney made his against a guy who was 2-4. Couture did make his against a guy who was 0-3 (ended his career) but he took a big step up in his 3rd and 4th fights stopping Belfort and beating the great kickboxer, former UFC champ Maurice Smith. You can compare the way that MMA come up in the game to someone like Hagler, who had to do it with no promoter or following.
There are too many variables in MMA to have a perfect record. Even the top-notch guys can get caught, slip, or otherwise lose to even a mediocre guy on a bad night. In boxing, if you slip, a ref stops the fight and helps you back up. If you slip in MMA, somebody jumps on top of you and elbows you in the eye socket. I love boxing because it's so specific. Because boxers are limited by what they can do, they do indeed develop the best upper body striking in the world. It's beautiful to watch. But at the same time, there are only so many ways to win, and in turn, only so many ways to lose. In MMA, there is much more going on. Because of that, it's both easier to win and easier to lose. A champion can get "shocked" and a scrub can beat someone decent with a good game plan. I think it's much easier for a guy to walk into MMA and do OK compared to boxing. Take Lesnar for example. Because of the variables, he can use his wrestling to dominate. Since that variable does not exist in boxing, he would get crushed. That's what makes MMA fun. It's unpredictable. There's a huge blend of skills. There are unique style match ups. On some nights it seems anything can happen. Both sports offer something unique, and because of that, I like both equally. That's also why people who try to compare them annoy the hell out of me. It's like appreciating tennis for its precision and hockey for its raw power. There's plenty of room to like both for different reasons.
Actually Couture has a 19-10 record. A couple of things here one this isnt boxing and Randy never got to pad his record the 1st 20 fights out there. In what 3 fights ? the man fought Vitor Belfort. Out of 29 fights the man has like 20 fights and pretty much all of his opponets where top level MMA fighters aside from a few. Also its worth nothing Randy has 3 BS losses. In the 2nd Belfort fight he got caught on his eyelid 19 secounds into the fight and it was stopped soon after. Josh Barnett tested positive for steroids after beating Couture and Illoukhine was cranking on the Kimura before the fight was restarted in the center of the ring. Hell you could really say Randy is 19-7 with 3 No Contest.
There's too many variables in MMA.... A sport where anything can happen...at anytime....if both opponents are well rounded , or even if a top fighter is confronted to a b level...or hell , in some cases...even a "can". The "mma underdog" will always have more chances than the "boxing underdog".
Like everyone has said, MMA(ufc especially) is a sport where you're consistantly placed against the best competition in a sport where anything can happen. The variables can't be easily controlled for Mixed Martial Artists so a loss is less indicative than boxing. It doesn't look good but Gatti had also had a lot of losses on his record, you dont even have to have a flawless record to be a legend.
"How good is an 18-10 record?" When you've fought the calibre of opponent Couture has, it's pretty impressive
It wouldn't be much of an exaggeration to say that it was his first legitmate match in half a decade.
