Mike Tyson has a cuban named Savigne that wants Beterbiev BADLY. GYM wants NO part of Savigne. I like Beterbiev, but I'd like to know why that isn't a fight they're interested in, whereas Tyson wants his old Cubano LHW to fight ALL the biggest names even though he's got an L, and only has 12/13 pro fight and is like 37 y/o.:think:think:think
I like Savigne, but I'd not heard anything about this other than a general statement that Tyson wants Savigne in there with any of the big boys. Have you got a source for this? FWIW I've got it a very decent fight - I know GYM are trying to steer Beterbiev towards a quick title shot however, cos Artur's talking about fighting for Canada at the 2016 Olympics which would mean he's got a fairly short window of opportunity in terms of both time and # of fights (he's got 10 fights left before he's ineligible, but would probably want at least 6 months with an am. trainer anyway, so time is likely to be the limiting factor). Savignes KO loss to a journeyman would also have to raise some eyebrows, but the wiser amongst us know that an early KO loss in the pro ranks doesn't necessarily mean s#it - although against Beterbiev, who was a KO beast from his amateur days it may be significant. EDIT - And given Savigne's age (and Tysons relative lack of promotional success) Iron Mike has to be looking to challenge anyone he can. Savigne ain't a big enough name to snag any of the titlists at this point (bad risk/ reward ratio), but Beterbiev is also likely to find himself struggling for the same reasons, so I say, why not?
I aint gonna dig aorund for the link, but Tyson went on about matching his guy with anyone in the top 10, and mentioned several others just outside or prospects, Beterbiev being one of em. And yeah, Beterbiev vs Savigne would be PURE FIREWORKS. Except, IMO, size, power, and overall skill would be on Savignes side, and while he was TKOd early in his career, it should also be noted that Savigne, as a CW, beasted Mendoza in better fashion than did Usyk or Chakkiev. Savignes up there in age, so avoiding him would be wise by any potential prospects. :think
Yeah, I kinda thought so ... it was a general kinda callout rather than a specific one for Beterbiev, I think I may have seen it. Mike does need to work hard to get Savigne some attention. The Savigne beatdown of Lacy might have done the job if it hadn't have been eclipsed by Beterbievs performance. I hope he gets his shot, but Iron Mike really doesn't seem to have that much pull and in an increasingly heated LHW division I can easily see Savigne being passed over.
In addition to getting KO'd by Harvey Jolly in 2 rounds, Savigne also went life-and-death at times against a shot Richard Hall. Hall hurt him badly a couple of times in that fight, too. Savigne's got heavy hands for sure, but Beterbiev would punch holes in him. 13:13 mark and from 20:14 onwards until the end of the round. http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xs5...ard-hall_sport
Beterbiev was awarded best boxer in amateur World Championship (2011 ?) as a lightheavy and a true k.o artist. Moved up to heavyweight but did not get the same succes as a heavy. Cuban Savigne was a cruiser weigh in his first pro fight but moved down to light heavy after his loss.
Beterbiev's amateur CV is already impressive enough as it is, but it would look considerably more so had he not been robbed in major championships numerous times and not been unlucky enough to draw the eventual gold medalists during pre medal stages in the others he competed in.
