he is ranked numb 2 in most peoples p4p lists but is he really actually as good as people think? his best achievments 1. beating cris eubank 2. beating robin reid closley via split decison 3. beating jeff lacy 4. outboxing kessler 5. scaping past hopkins in some peoples opinions how evr people say he has beaten an unproven dane, an overhyped american and overaged hopkins? wat do u think?
H2H far stronger than resume, obviously. Nobody is deluded enough to say his resume is outstanding, even big fans such as myself, but it is solid and proven against varying styles even though there aren't as many A grade fighters as I'd like. Still, great fighter.
I think he's a great fighter. I think that he's one of the best 100 to have ever drawn breath. I think he is underestimated, generally, but there are those who overestimate him, of course.
He's a good super middleweight - maybe the greatest of all-times ... but the most competetive years in that division came a long time ago. Barkley Duran Leonard Hearns Benn Eubank Collins Ottke Jones Toney The list goes on and on ... add to that ... the stock of talent that has risen since Calzaghe's departure.
its a shame he didnt come along a few years earlier for the benn/eubank/collins/watson and graham prime time!!! however the guy has to go down as a great boxer purely for being an undefeated world champion for the best part of 11 years!!!! and he may well have beaten all those guys mentioned above during primetime too!!!
It's hard to judge exactly. He will go down as the greatest super middleweight ever but he will probably be known as a guy whos skill's were far greater than his resume sugest's. It's a pity that he's only getting recognition from outside Europe now as i believe he is past his best. People say he just win's fight's with a high work rate of powerless flurries but this is not how he has always faught. Because of his brittle hands he can't put as much power into his shots so he doesn't appear to hurt his opponent's so therefore looks less exciting and threatening than he was in his prime. At his best he is as quick as anyone at his weight, throws good combinations, has decent reflexes, has a great chin and has decent, underatted power. Alot of his opponent's have said afterwards that they were supprissed by how hard he actually punched. However i believe his greatest asset is that he is a natural fighter. His ability to adapt to his opponents style in the ring appears almost innate. He said in a pre-Hopkins interview that he rarely watched films of his opponents. This could be a load of bollocks but i wouldn't be suprised if it was true. He does seem to just naturally adapt and evolve his style during a fight to overcome his foe. Obviously his cuffing punches and amazing ability to rarely locate his passport are annoying but overall i think he is a very good and exciting fighter. I would say that he is the greatest super middleweight ever and if he fought at middleweight then he would give any middleweight of any era a decent fight. He wouldn't necasarrilly win them all but i don't think he would ever be trully out classed.
how many british fighters of the last 15-20 years actually made a legitimate attempt to become names in the US? this is what we're talking about here and why guys like calzaghe, benn and eubank will always have a question mark next to their name.
