Joe's recent actions prove that Joe himself does not believe he is as good as many of his fans think he is.
Calzaghe is a class act, I agree with people that state that there is a lack of all time greats on his resume but let's be honest there haven't been that many all time greats for him to fight. He fought Eubank, Collins pulled out of that fight, Benn was finished then, RJJ was never going to happen he's admitted that himself and fair minded people would have to say that Hopkins out priced himself for their earlier proposed fight (a number of high profile people have stated this). The only ones he possibly could have fought were Johnson, who had a poor record at SMW anyway and Ottke. If anyone thinks Joe wouldnt have been beaten by Ottke they need their head examined! The guy hasn't lost for 17 years, he was an incredible amateur fighter and won a stack of ABA titles before he turned pro, he's been world champion for 17 years and is unbeaten! Even great fighters slip up now and again, Calzaghe hasn't and that is due to an incredible will to win! He's beaten everybody put in front of him, has adapted through serious injuries that could've ruined lesser willed fighters careers, has come through fights where this has hindered him and hasn't backed off. His career was mostly exciting, fighting in a relentless style with the occasional poor fight which more or less every fighter in history has done! As I said at the start the guy is a class act, maybe not everyones cup of tea but an incredibly talented fighter nonetheless. Give the fella his due he's not bad really!
all i needed to read..... there isnøt a "lack" of ATG - there are none. not only that, jones and hopkins were always available to any fighter who was willing to court the financial side of boxing, make their name in the US, and put themselves in a position to be financiallly viable to make a fight happen. why do you think jones and hopkins will go down as greats and calzagfhe will be a "what mght have been..."? because hopkins and jones owned their titles on the world stage and got high profile fights against top opponents which cemented their legacy. hopkins might have ruled a weak division and his public claim to fame might be felix and oscar - but he had to be in that position to begin with to get their attention. let me spell it out again - and i'll do it in capital letters (even though i hate doing this), so people can remember it.... IF YOU WANT TO SIT IN THE COMFORT OF YOUR HOME COUNTRY AND RACK UP (predominantly) MEANINGLESS DEFENSES, THEN DON'T COMPLAIN WHEN THE BIG PLAYERS IN THE BOXING GAME DON'T TAKE YOU SERIOUSLY! for brits coming to this board it might hurt their pride to learn this - they are unlikely to get it from their countrymen - but thats just the honest truth.
Well -- Then I guess it's like my old grandpappy use to say; "Everybody likes a little ass, but NOBODY likes a smart ass."
I strongly suggest that Badintentions and RealSpitts excersize caution. If me and my boy from Iceland decide to turn on you, well, -- It won't be pretty.
