I think that Casamayor is one of the top 3 (or 4 lightweights if Pac is still a lightweight). The guy never ducked anybody aside from running a big mouth the guy is a solid fighter. So what is next for him a fight with Juan Diaz or Valero. I just want to hear from the rest of you as far as how good you think he is and whats next for him.
Very VERY good. With a mean, spiteful streak. This guy will do ANYTHING to win. He is immensely proud, but I feel he is starting to look a bit shopworn. I'd like to see him quit before a young gun humiliates him (wher have you heard THAT before?!)
Joel Casamayor WAS a very very good fighter. Joel Casamayor IS a solid gate keeper who can give anyone a real tough fight but is no longer a headliner or a superstar.
His best days are behind him. But in his heyday he was one of the best but a little too willing to bend the rules to his liking.
I think Casamayor is an awesome fighter. He is the kind of boxer who doesn't have to train that much and still win.
To be fair though there's a lot of evidence pointing towards the "WAS" portion then there is for the IS. Struggling against Jose Armando Santa Cruz and looking like a shell of the defensive maestro he used to be against Katsidis are pretty recent examples of Casamayor looking lethargic and/or past it. I still think he's a top 10 fighter at 135 and capable of beating anyone IN that top 10. That said he's also capable of losing to anywhere from 1-20 as well.
This is correct. Not just the Marquez fight which was almost excusable (though I didn't expect such a KO). His performances against Santa Cruz and Katsidis left a lot to be desired by his previously high standards. Casamayor at his best would take apart a brawler like Katsidis with little fuss, but he got dragged into a poor fight because of his fading physical abilities.
I see where you're coming from but I do still think that he's still a pretty big name at 135. Persoanlly, I'd love to see how the likes of Valero would do against him- we'd soon find out if Valero is hype or genuinely can compete with the best in the division.
He still has a little bit to give, he TKO'd Katsidis when everyone was already counting him out. I wanted to see the Diaz fight but shame Casamayor injured his back. I see him maybe winning a lesser title (IBO, IBA, etc).
Personally I think at this point the best use of Casamayor WOULD be in a fight against a Valero or an Antonio Demarco. He certainly still has enough to test any young fighter at 135 if not beat him. That said? I'd like to see Casamayor more in pseudo dream match type fights. For instance, the sadist in me still has interest in seeing Casa against Barrera or Morales or even Kid Diamond II at 135.
Age and the amount of wars he has been in is starting to show as his performances are becoming very inconsistent; however, he still has a performance in him, and I pity the fool that is on the recieving end of that performance. Back in his heyday, he was one of the very best fighters in the game.
