In my opinion he is at best similar level with Frank Bruno. That is a very good level heavyweight, but not up there with best in division. Whats peoples thoughts?
He needs to be a bit rougher in the clinch imo. He can't outbox Usyk. He needs to come in bigger and try to rough him up.
Big risk. If he isn't successful in quick time, he might as well retire on his stool after three rounds. He would gas and be easy pickings for Usyk. Joshua is very good and among the best in the division who should all be competing against each other, but he would lose more than he wins, probably. He has been overrated since the day dot.
Definitely see what you are saying but only way he can win imo. Usyk started really well and Joshua was 3-0 down straight away. That can't happen again in the rematch. The uppercut was barely used. His uppercut is a great punch and can take anybody out.
Very good. Will never be "great" or "elite" but he's very good. Will he ever be World Champion again? Unless he wins a vacant title then no. Won't beat Usyk or Fury.
Way better than Bruno. He has had 12 world title fights and is a 2 times unified heavyweight champion of the world and maybe he will become a 3 time heavyweight champion of the world perhaps undisputed time will tell.
I think that’s it. For me; the two elite talents are Usyk and Fury. Wilder can beat anyone given his power and there’s a few other decent fighters in there ie Joyce and Hrgovic who are also very good. Joshua is probably 3rd best behind Fury and Usyk.. but with the asterisk that Wilder feasibly could win a fight against anyone given his power. He’s not bad by any stretch - he’s very good. He’s just not quite elite.
I agree it's basically the only way he can win, but I had him winning 2 rounds in that bout and Howard Foster had it 115-113. His uppercut is a good punch but it's ridiculously overrated. If the greatest punch you've ever thrown didn't put down an old and tired, already glass-jawed Klitschko, then it can't be that lethal. He also hit Pudding Pulev with about 8 consecutive uppercuts at one point and didn't put him down. Regardless, if he were to do what you're proposing it would give him a better chance than any other alternative, probably. He has a good array of punches and he can throw in combinations with above average hand speed and power. The problem is that he gasses, and if he misses or doesn't hurt Usyk much, he will be countered and jumped upon. I think if he takes the immediate rematch he will probably go for another balanced approach, but with a bit more aggression.
Yes but different era. Joshua fought Povetkin, Klitschko and Pulev when they were all well passed their best.
Interesting Bruno comparison, not saying it’s wrong but would be interesting to see how Joshua would have dealt with prime Lewis and Tyson. Personally I wonder if he would have done much better. Probably around the same level I guess, good fighters with decent qualities. AJ could be fun to watch as well which is a decent attribute to have, exciting style, well it was before he played it safer.
Good but there’s a gap between good and great and an even bigger one between good and elite. Made huge money, turned boxing more mainstream in the UK and had some decent wins.
Bruno fought in a much tougher era where World Titles had to be won in the ring - Joshua won his from the worst World Heavyweight Champion ever then regained it from a fat little mess equivalent to Butterbean in the Bruno era. Both non elite World Champions but Joshua's CV shows a far easier ride - obviously subject to the approval of CV Analyst @Mitch87
