Now Please Please Please.... Before You Jump To Conclusions (hermit, boo, pavlik fan) this is a serious thread... so try to refrain from responding with "how good is paul williams" I'm asking an honest question and i want to hear honest answers... on one hand you could say... he dethroned jermain taylor and was sick / had a bad fight against bhop on the other hand you could say... the jermain taylor win is over rated because he hasnt done **** since bhop exposed him i'm looking for dead serious answers here....
He has a decent record, but previous events have suggested that he is nothing special like we perhaps initially thought. Beating Taylor at that time the way he did was very good, but since he just hasent done enough, gary locket, rubio, one sided defeat to Hopkins. Espino isnt the answer, he needs a big win and soon to get himself back near the top 10 of peoples p4p ratings.
He is real good, and is world class at 160.. He makes up for his weaknesses with his strengths ( Chin, size, Toughness, Power, stamina , workrate, good technical punching skills) At 160 he is going to be hard to beat, he is close to 6'2 with a solid frame and throws each shot with bad intensions .... Many guys hit him with their best shots and he keeps coming ( much like Williams ) , which can be very demoralizing, especially when getting hit with stiff jabs and powerful rights straight down the pipe. How good is Pavlik? He is a worldclass fighter and the king of 160, is he top p4p material ? Not really, but at 160 he is a beast.. I am a big Pavlik and Williams fan, and like I have been saying.. I really think it's a terrible matchup for Williams... and that Williams will have a hard time winning this one.. No doubt it will be William's biggest test, but if can walk through Kelly's blows and return fire and beat Pavlik, I would be VERY VERY impressed.. Williams would deserve top 3 p4p imo if he beats Pavlik.
He's good overall.....but looks "great" in a weak division.....his biggest wins is Taylor X2....and one of those times was above 160..... good fighter overall, but not a ATG material...maybe he might get into the Hall of fame, depending on what he does the rest of his carear....hall of fame standards are low...
:good this is a very fair post and i agree w/ ya. and the thing is...kelly is a mw. he may be a big mw but he's a mw. yes he has his flaws but so does most every fighter. those who have little to no flaws are known as atg's and nobody is accusing kelly of being an atg. i can't really add to anything you said macmanama, but i will post this b/c i think if you watch these highlights, you see what his strengths are and how he uses them better than his opponents at 160 use theirs. the sole purpose of this fight was for kelly to impose his will, use those strenghts you mentioned and walk his opponent down. he was not supposed to win this fight. mind you miranda was a guy who was notorious for making highlight reel ko's and hit hits pav w/ everything he has. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rFr_uPHUnFo[/ame] you see in this video what he lacks and you see what he packs. and at 160 what he brings to the table is enough to hang w/ anyone. i can't say the same for 168 +. but at 160, he's a beast and has taken every one of his opponents best and laid them out. no mw has seen the final round against pav. edit to point out the exchange at 1:50-2:00 of that video. he is getting cracked by a guy who lays people out when he was at mw. flaws aside...that is impressive
i think hardcore boxing fans have a horrible habit of complety over analysing every single micro detail about a fighters career..... lol. Pavlik is a very good fighter, a world champion, beat a fellow good fighter in jermain taylor before jermain had as many real hard miles on him, beat Miranda in a way only abraham has been able to do in 2 fights, and was beaten by a great fighter in Hopkins. He lacks a lot of qualities that make a very good boxer (adaptability, ring generalship, fighting while backing up, defence) But on the other side of the coin, he has qualities that make a very good fighter (Big power, big pressure, has decent size for the class, throws decently straight shots, decent enough chin) Too much is often made IMO about what a fighter is lacking, when the same fighter often makes up for that by an abundance of other qualities. That being said, its plain to see Pavlik has a large area of improvement to do to be a more complete fighter, but if he doesnt he is still a very good fighter. I think if one wants to dissect his career as of yet, and him as a fighter..... it will show that hes proven himself to indeed be a very good fighter, with a below average reign so far, and with much of the equation left unfinished because its still very early in his 'legacy' but the fact that he is at the level where he is at least on the path of building one is a good sign.
Lets start with '' 2010'' and hopefully a healed hand. I personally see him knocking out williams in the 8-9 round, early, brutal, body work and then Bute, not sure about this, yet! I think he might have to have a mandatory first.
