He's bordering on elite. He beat beat Cotto, a man who many people considered to be a an elite fighter, however, question marks still remian over how well he'll be able to compete against a fighter with a high work rate, that doesn't gas out and has a sturdy chin (ie Paul williams). If he fights and beats Williams in the next 18 months or so, then he'd unquestionably be considered an elite fighter on my part.
You don't make it into the Top10 P4P rankings of the most respected magazines and websites without being an elite fighter and the best at welterweight. http://www.thering-online.com/ringpages/ratings2.html http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/columns/story?columnist=rafael_dan&id=3592864 http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/boxing/bbc_world_rankings/default.stm http://sports.yahoo.com/box/leaguepage/ki-boxranks082108;_ylt=A0wNdc5GUfZIdj0AUgOUxLYF?prov=yhoo&type=lgns http://www.secondsout.com/rankstat/p4p.cfm http://www.setanta.com/en/Sport/News/Other-sports/2008/01/14/Boxing-Setantas-P4P-Rankings/ http://www.b o x i n g s c e n e.com/forums/view.php?pg=pound http://www.secondsout.com/rankstat/p4p.cfm http://www.boxrec.com/
Great shout Boxers obsession with keeping their 0 is one of the many reasons for boxings decline in recent years, the sport would be better off with more fighters like Cotto and Margarito.
i'm stuck on how exactly i wanted to vote, but while i think he's fantastic he still starts too slow and gives away early rounds. he can beat anyone he bangs with, but someone with better skill and range then cotto could hand him another loss.
He's oversized and not even the best in his division. He's not really a boxer at all. I can't see him moving up more than 1 division-- so I'd grade him out as a B in the WW division and a C if he moves up at all!!
He beat Cotto and has good fundamentals. A rock solid chin, good body punching, good physical fundamentals and he is a very good pressure fighter who keeps going all night. But he is also a very limited technical fighter, although his pressure could be considered a technique itself. But compared to Cotto, PBF, Kessler, Dawson or the likes his overall technical ability is bad. I would say that he is a solid b+. BTW I rate Cotto as an A level fighter who just faced the wrong opponent.
They're not excuses, as far as the first three losses are concerned. Margo was 16 in his first two losses and 18 in his third against very older fighters. In the Santos fight the bout was stopped on cuts and the scorecards were pretty close at the time. So one can't call that a "clear" victory, eh? I wouldn't call the Williams loss "razor thin", it was a clear 2 point win for me, but the fight WAS close nevertheless. Plus, if Paul hadn't made a comeback to win round 12, the fight was going to be a majority draw according to the official scorecards. A rematch with Williams HAS to happen in the near future if you ask me.
His a B+ fighter, he relies more on work rate than he does on skill. His not an A level fighter, because A level fighters have a complete skill set, meaning they have A level defence on top of A level offence. Margarito has a semi-polished offencive arsenal and an above average defensive arsenal, so thats why I give him a B+. The plus coming from his heart, mental strength and durability.
He has the potential to beat anyone at Welter(Pauls going down 09) and get up to Middle and avenge Santos for the robbery commited in PR. Then beat Mora, have a mega fight with Angulo and take on Forrest. He will problaby duck andy khole though that guy is crazy, then he would retire. **** that would be awesome.
It doesn't really matter how the terms are on the next fight between Williams and Margarito (if it happens). If they fight go ahead and grade Margarito down a notch because he will loose again. If you forgot they almost had to go to court to get the first fight-- It's not like the SO FEARED Margarito was begging to get into the ring the first time. I think he took the fight before the Cotto fight because he understands who he can and CAN'T beat!!
