just wondering, iv seen him take some massive shots but walking through them like it was a weak shot. has he ever been rocked? has he ever been knocked down (not off-balance)?
His ability to absorb continous punishment for the whole fight is immense. Williams wailed on him for 12 rounds and even though Cotto lost he was hitting Margo with shots that would break other fighters. Santos gave him 154 leather and he has taken good shots from good fighters like Clottey. Margos durability is looking legendary.
it sure is. alot of mexicans have great chins. i personally think it is the way they'r brought up? i.e lots of fist/street fights as kids.
He hasn't faced anywhere near the kind of puncher to put him at the greatest of all-time. He's not even in contention.
Someone will eventually say he was hurt against Santos. He wasn't. He was taken back for a second against a guy who weighed in 170 that night but never looked remotely hurt to me.
I agree, he was hurt against Santos moving upto 154, and sure, he recovered, but the simply fact is that he was hurt. I cant think of a time I've ever seen Hagler or James Toney hurt like that. Maybe Toney in his early years, the Nunn fight I think he got hurt (cant remember it was that long ago), but he's a middle weight taking the best of a genuine heavy in Sam Peter... twice. Margo's chin is granite, but how it fares to the likes of Marvin and James I dont know, jury is out.
He hasn't faced an 'ATG puncher', but took pretty sick shots from Kermit Cintron who is a HUGE knockout artist, Santos, who has a very good punch and did manage to rock Margarito, but by a HUGE punch, and Cotto landed several clean blows huge weight behind them. How can he take it? Maybe it's his size - he's more like a MW, therefore taking WW bombs don't have the same effects... but taking the full power of Williams, Cotto, Santos and Cintron - all of them weighing at least 160 pounds fight night - proved he has a superb chin. Historical chin? I don't thing there's something like it. If a fighter retires without getting knocked down of badly hurt (there are plenty of them), who do you rank one above other? :think
I think he could move up to 160 and take clean shots from pretty much all of them without being knocked over. The guys at 147 simply don't punch hard enough - the Cintron fight was shocking. He just stood there with his arms by his side and started laughing, almost goading Cintron to try to knock him out (ala Lewis vs McCall II in a strange way).
Santos did hurt him though. Thats not an ATG chin. Cotto is a pretty average puncher at WW, and he wasn't getting full leverage because he was on the backfoot when he's used to coming forward. Cintron? Tell me when he knocks somebody decent out. Even in recent times the likes of Tua and McCall have shown better chins against much bigger punchers. James Toney has gone from middleweight to heavyweight, albeit with a good defence, but he's taken shots and hardly looked remotely hurt.
I'd rate it an A. He's not been knocked out (or knocked down that I know of) in 42 fights. And at least two guys he's fought Cintron and Cotto I would consider good punchers.
Cintron can hit very hard, and Margarito was never bothered. Wait until Margarito's career is over and then we'll discuss ATG chin status.
Man you could make a case fo it. Clottey, Cotto, Willaims are all relatively hard punchers, and they didnt even fase him. Cotto is a hell of a puncher, he has broken bones before. He doenst have great one punch ko power (what ww does?) but the accumilation effect is what has broke most people he faught down. Margarito took all Cottos punches almost all to the head and didnt flinch. The man is top 10 all time definitely
