Dont know much about this guy except hes fighing Saul Alvarez in a couple of weeks whos tipped to be a new sensation...does Rhodes have a chance?
Yes he has a chance. More chance then Hatton did. He's the true meaning of a veteran and this fight's kinda ironic in a way. Ryan was once like Saul a young fighter winning titles here with a big name but he was pushed on to early and lost his way mid career and has had revitalized spell late in his career. He will be dangerous this is his last chance...pretty much all or nothing. He's from same Gym as Naseem Hamed so he's unorthodox and can bang and tough it out. His best weight is Light Middle where he's enjoyed his success. He's a good fighter and is no easy touch for Saul.
Never lost at 154,very good boxer with good skills who unlike Hatton is big and strong and will cause Canelo problems. I can see a close fighting going to the hometown fighter tbh but a late KO for Rhodes would not surprise me one bit.
Good enough to cause an upset, big he's gotta win incredible big down there or knock him out which i cant really see
I am going to back Rhodes against Alvarez. I dont see what makes Alvarez so good in many people eyes. His handspeed isnt unbelievable, he crowds his work, at times doesnt pick his shots, its like he decides im going to throw these punches this round and thats it. Doesnt create openings all that well. Dont think he has great power and his defence isnt great and is especially poor when hes applying pressure. The only thing that worries me is Rhodes inactivity at his age but he looks like the type of guy thats always in the gym anyway. I think Rhodes in round 7 - 9
I don't think he'll win but he's a lot more of a challenge than Hatton. A lot more. For a start he's quite unorthodox. Very experienced. Good power. Good speed. And he's fought as high as middle and light middle is his natural weight unlike the former.
Yep can't remember what poster said it. Think it was either Flea or Slip (Where's he at btw!). Anyways they said something along lines 'he's not made me go wow like he's a superstar' and there right i haven't been overly impressed. He's good for his age partly because he's physically mature for a lad of his age. He handled situations well like being stunned early against Cotto but i never thought to myself 'this guys unbelievable' Ryan's got the mental strength and belief that's a good start then the fact he does bang at 154lbs makes this a interesting fight. I think at some point in this fight he's going to enjoy a spell of success and that's when he has to take his chance.
I just don't think Rhodes will quite handle the pressure as well as some might be anticipating. I know some good judges think he has a shot, I'm just not so sure. I'd love to be wrong, but I think Moore made a lot of errors that let Rhodes into the fight that I don't think Alvarez will. Moore seemed to run out of steam to some degree. When Moore was at his best he was bullying Rhodes and we were all wondering how he was hanging on.
That is a good point. That was a long while ago now as well and in different conditions and with a fighter who was experiencing problems physically towards end of career. Moore fought wrong fight that night but Ryan still had to finish job and landed a sweet shot to get the ball rolling. I think he does have a chance but he's up against it. I won't write him off cos i think he will land at some point on Canelo. He's not a Julian Jackson type but he may stun him and you never know. But in principle what you said was right and it's hard to look past Alvarez.
He's mainly getting hype for his age and persona, he's had some good, solid wins and has been matched well, but this is his first fight against genuine 154lber if I'm not wrong? At least as of late. And no, whilst he shows decent flashes, I'd expect any serious fighter to be able to beat the fighters he has faced as he has. But if we're talking prodigies, then, no. Useful contender/belt holder, exciting fights, some good wins here and there, deffo IMO. Rhodes could beat him though. If he doesn't spark him it's unlikely To be honest, ring rust will play against him here. Maybe take him a few rounds to get his timing, sharpness back and establish some of his sharp unorthodox offence off. As he did against Jamie Moore, he'll have to come through Hell against a guy that is gonna' be launching punches at him, and not as an average pressure fighter, he has some flashy flourishes and can throw fairly dynamic combos sporadically. And Rhodes really had to suck it up against Moore. I dunno if Rhodes is quite gonna' have it in him after such a lay off, and the fact that I do think Alvarez is, on my own eyes, a cut above the European level opposition he's been facing. But Rhodes has a chance, he's not jumping in with P-Dub or whatnot. He can win, but I don't expect him to.
The fact Ryan hasn't been active and his last fight was against some Dos santos type, thats worrying for me. Going to Mexico is a tough enough assignment without the tools being sharp.
Not world class. Alvarez is impressing everyone right now; i dont see Rhodes getting in the way of his plans.
