By history standards how good is Sergey Kovalev at light heavyweight? I've watched his fight with Ward 3 times now and everytime I've seen it for Kovalev. No disrespect to Andre Ward hes pretty much proven himself a great fighter IMO and fought a good fight like he always does. Kovalev though showed that his heavy hands to go along with his boxing skills are very hard to beat. I'm not sleeping on Adonis Stevenson though as I wouldn't count him out against the Krusher or Ward either. Three very good light heavyweight active right now but I wanna focus on Kovalev. How do think he matches up against some of the past great light heavyweights Vs Qawi vs Spinks vs Muhammad vs Hill vs Jones vs Tarver How do think the Krusher does? I personally wouldn't count him out in any of these match ups.
He's much better than what you give him credit for. I rate Andre Ward very highly myself, he knows how to win decisions and knows every 'old school' ugly trick in the book to do it. Kovalev W Muhammad UD W Hill UD W Tarver KO W Qawi UD L Jones L Spinks
I thought much more highly of him prior to this past Saturday , I also see ward in a better light than I had prior to sat. Kovalev , I feel his stamina really let him down or he has no idea how he's doing during fights. Ward he's not remotely close to the level his fans want to sell people on his skills, their workable, nothing spectacular but plenty there. what sold me more than all else was his will to try anything to win and truly never giving up. He is one tough sob, that and his conditioning were his best attributes , by far. i still rate Kovalev ahead of ward and strongly believe his conditioning will be addressed and he'll take care of ward how he should had been able to this past weekend
Levels. Ward is elite, Hopkins was ageing but still world class, Pascal is B+ level. Both RJJ and Tarver had Ward losing. Remember this.. Kovalev dropped all 3 within 1/2 rounds with ease! Power! Won every round vs Bhop, dominated Ward for pretty much half a fight! THAT HAS NEVER BEEN DONE! Froch, Dawson, Kessler... Lacks a bit of gas, imagine a Kovalev with Calzaghe stamina/workrate! Needs to keep that killer instinct which seems to be waning of late and be more clinical ala W Klitschko. Overall an ATG in the making. That is if he doesn't do a Pavlik and mentally implode or end up with trainer issues etc talent wise he is the goods! Better than Michalkzewski etc
Kovalev is nothing but the truth , don't eva forget it . Look what he did to Ward . The man is that damn good . No one will dare question him again . The hype is very real . Skill , Intelligence, Power . We all saw what he is made of . Btw I will never pick against a Prime Roy Jones Jr . Roy beats Kovalev in a thriller .
I think GGG is more methodical, economical, clinical and patient. Beterbiev is the LHW GGG for me... Very understated and subtle a lot of what he does but devastatingly effective. Kovalev reminds me a little of prime Vitali.
Kovalev is a very dynamic fighter. Has patience. Has a very underrated jab. Has good in and out movement for a guy with his length and size. Of course the power. Accuracy/straight shot placement. Just needs to work on cutting off the ring and stamina. Hes a great offensive fighter but I think he needs more development in his hooks and uppercuts. Throws mostly straights.
In terms of guys who smash through opponents with ease because of their immense power, I don't think I can remember too many - if any - who were actually as solid a boxer as Kovalev. Like all power punchers, it seems, he probably is a slightly better gas tank short of being unstoppable at LHW. Still enough time to put that right too. He dominated Ward in the early stages of that fight.
Kovalev is sustained by his power although he has the foundation to be a great fighter, at the moment he is pretty much one dimensional. He is not adept at fighting while backing up and he can't fight on the inside. His ring IQ is suspect because he doesn't make adjustments to his opponent well. I won't put him up there with the greats just because he has the power to knock people out. That's ridiculous. You gotta ask yourself, how would he perform if he injured his right hand and couldn't throw it in a fight the way he wants to.
I think he lost to Ward by 12 rounds,Kova won a measly 3 rounds,Ward won 12. 6 other rounds were a draw.
