Lmfao, is this really the level of boxing discussion this forum has got to now? The best argument for something being "you can't do it therefore it's good"? No ****, they're professional boxers... Christ
It’s good considering the fact that the heavyweight division is pretty much a wasteland when there isn’t 50 rematches scheduled. Franklin wasn’t a bad pick after 2 losses. Helenius was a poor choice but that wasn’t AJ’s fault. I’m actually surprised he’s not getting more credit for Wallin since so many people were saying he was gonna school AJ. The only criticism I have is Ngannou. It really should’ve been Hrgovic or Zhang, just a terrible fight. You do have to respect the fact that he’s more active than most of the other top fighters. Like him or not the man always has a fight scheduled.
Like I said, you are hardly one to talk. Best leave it at that, don’t think you have much to add on this forum other than insults.
This run was not a good run. They were stay busy fight and money grab fights. People should demand better for what they are paying for and before anyone spew “don't pay for it”, you can’t. When you pay for Dazn or ESPN you are at the mercy of what THEY want to put on. It is this exact scenario HBO boxing and Showtime died. Pushing over paid house fighter with matches people have zero interest in.
1 - Franklin, 21-1, 6-3, 235, Never stopped. Good amateur background. 2 - Helenius, 32-4, 6-6, 250, Powerful, world class amateur. 3 - Wallin, 26-1, 6-6, 240, SOUTHPAW, world class amateur. 4 - Ngannou, 0-1, 6-4, 275, Fought the heavyweight champion in his first official boxing match to a close decision. If Joshua gets by Ngannou, it's an excellent run. If Ali, Foreman, Marciano, or any of the forum "favorites" had gotten through the first 3 fighters and were going to fight Ngannou, posters on this board would be praising them. NONE of them ever fought 3 huge, athletic fighters who compare to Joshua's list. I'd much rather fight Folley, London, Patterson, and Williams, or Roman, fat, night club singing Frazier and Norton, or Walcott, Charles, Moore, and mummified Louis, than the group that Joshua has fought and is scheduled to fight. If Joshua loses to Ngannou, it's still a good run, and that will tell us much more about Ngannou. Nobody, other than Tyson Fury has ever been in a boxing ring with a guy like Ngannou, huge, strong, has stamina, has performed in front of crowds, knows what it is like to get hit, has competed in a combat sport, and has been boxing for many years in the gym. Takam has been in the gym with Ngannou and he warned that the guy was world class. Wallin is a huge SOUTHPAW, in earlier eras he would have had zero fights, nobody would have fought him.
There you have it, folks. This is the opinion I'm trying to put a spotlight on. Two top 50 guys, a top 15 featherfist, and a 0-1 MMA fighter is an "Excellent run". If Joshua loses to the MMA fighter, it's "still a good run" LOL No one gave Wilder much credit for a KO1 of Helenius. No one gives Fury credit for taking Wallin's 0. When Joshua fights them they become legends. Reminds me of how a 41 year old Klitschko is better than a 39 year old Klitschko, right? I'm seeing a pattern here.
Got a kick at the way you put in their place the HW heroes (of too many here) of the past. They were the best of their era - no more or less - and as such deserve respect. But not the ridiculous rose colored glasses nostalgia lens many look at them here. That they would roll over modern 2000s era HWs is nonsense. HW is unlimited, and generally they've gotten bigger, more powerful, and better during the past century. I'm taking a mid view on AJs run. It's been fairly good, cautiously matched (except for Francis), not excellent. He should've fought Filip, Zhilei, or the like by this upcoming bout.
Franklin and Helenius were good confidence building fights, but when the co-main outshines your next two events you're headlining? Pick up your game AJ.
It was a great run following back-to-back losses. Which heavyweight had a better run in 2023? I'd say Zhang did, and Parker also. But those two aside, I think AJ did as well as could be reasonably expected following the Usyk losses.
Not as great of a run as John Cazale. This content is protected Honestly, it was fine. Franklin was coming off a decision loss. Helenius was basically coming off a one-round loss. (Officially, he fought in a restaurant like seven days before the Joshua fight, but that was nothing.) Ngannou is coming off a loss and hasn't won a fight yet. Beating guys who are coming off losses of their own, including one guy coming off a loss who still has never won a boxing match, isn't super impressive, if we're being honest. But they were all tough heavyweights and certainly far better opponents than guys like Michael Hunter is fighting in his comeback. Even though he hasn't won a fight yet, Ngannou is by far the biggest puncher Joshua has faced in many years ... maybe since Wlad. Joshua doesn't tend to fight guys who can punch really hard. (Wallin couldn't punch his way out of a wet paper bag.) So, I am looking forward to it. Should be a fun night. Hoping it turns into a real shootout.
