Dirrell was the US 165 pounder and Ward fought at 178 in the 2004 Olympics. They were super tight and trained together from the trials all the way up to the games.
Good boxer but hardly top tier cause his strat to win literally depended on getting every advantage and abusing absolut illegal tactics. - the fight against kessler should have been a DQ just like Wlad against pove - Lost the first fight to kovalev in very clair fashion - literally beat kovalev in a ball busting rematch contest, that kovalev didnt know of - after winning all title he retired even thought there where 3 absolut dangerous russians on kovalevs level he could have fought his fight against froch was a masterpiece. But in all honesty, its also the fault of his opponents, i know from my boxing experience that most referees are stupid low lifes that dont give a **** about you. If you get punched in the balls or headbuttet, give it back 2 as hard even if they dq you. Thats still better then losing and nobody even caring.
Great fighter, one of the best of this era. Hated because he beat all the Euro boogie men. Could box, fight inside, mean, just a really rare combination of skills.
Kessler was nobody's boogieman. Delusional Ward fans call MK a eurobum and a great win at the same time.
Very, very ****ing overrated, may have done well in a crossover mma fight though. As for what happened to him, well he became a very biased tv commentator.
Yep. That’s why this Dr. Shaw-Hi(Yeah. Right) told Dirrell to pull out the S6 when it was time for them matchup.. Andre Ward is a great as he won the S6 during perhaps the strongest and deepest era of the division’s history.. He should have lost the 1st Kovalev fight but the rematch was legit and there should have been a trilogy.
pathetic he didnt fight hopkins and dirrel. there is no such thing as friends in boxing, you fight the best, it's a sport.
Headbutted his way to a win against Kessler. Clearly lost to Kovalev in their first fight and was handed the second. Mentally tough but way too dirty and very suspect on the PED front. Overrated imo.
I never was able to warm to Dre and I rated him far lower than most. He just seemed to get away with anything he wanted in bouts and was a very dirty and unpleasing to watch kinda fighter. Also as soon as he showed signs of decline in the middle of his so called prime he bailed before that inevitable loss came.
Wasn't just injuries though he had his fair share of them. After the Super 6 win he took 9 months off, not due to injury but he felt like he deserved a break from boxing. He was at the height of his popularity but lost a ton of momentum with this prolonged vacation. The fact is he declined to fight Bute and told Bute he didn't deserved a shot and should fight someone good like Froch first which Bute did only for it to back fire and the potential Ward/Bute super fight was scuppered. Ward should have fought Bute after the Super 6, Bute wanted it and it was a winnable fight it would of only increased his popularity had he dominated Bute. He also had that period of time off due to legal dispute with his promoter Goosen, which he unsurprisingly lost. That cost him 18 months out of the ring when the year before he'd restored some momentum with the Dawson win but again threw away all the good will gained from that win with this lengthy legal dispute.
