How good was he really? He has a couple of losses to no-name fighters.

I see him as a slow, no-defense having plodder. If he was good, he wouldn't have had to resort to loading his gloves.

A great exciting Mexican pressure fighter, who like most tend to rack up a few losses to nobodies when he was younger, when he found his groove he was a beast. 2 of his early losses were very early, he was only 18, the other loss was close and a SD on a cut, the Williams match was close as possible to a draw, and there's no shame in losing to Williams who was also a beast. The wrap controversy is overblown and there's zero evidence he used it in any fight aside from the Mosley fight, the evidence for the first Cotto match was circumstantial at best.

Agree with your assessment ( OP ).
A scoundrel who's entire career has to be questioned.
Vastly overrated anyway and those who tout him as a threat to Floyd Mayweather Jr are really reaching.

garbage....good chin and good stamina...no real boxing skill....

i like paul williams...he was a tough out...but williams gave away his advantages and seemed to train only to throw punches....he was overrated as well....thats why a guy like lara was easily able to outbox...

dont get me wrong...williams and margarito were both in fun fights to watch....but margarito was trash really when he faced elite level guys...if cotto had tied up a bit in the 2nd half of the first fight he would have easily won that fight and there prob never would have been a rematch...which cotto easily won...

pretty much this, people will say he loaded gloves and thats why he nevrr won again but thats cus he faced Pac and then cotto with a messed up eye. That and just like you said his style will always cause him to lose to lesser fighters and age quicker

How good was Tony Margarito ? ........
1 He was good enough to make the so called TBE mess his pants when he merely asked him a question politely
2 He was good enough to LEGITIMATELY make Cotto sink to his knees in surrender & would have repeated the beating had the NY doc not saved Cotto the embarrassment of quitting AGAIN !!
3 Tony was a FIGHTER!!never took a backward step. In my mind from the time he matured the only two men to legitimately beat him were Pacquaio & Williams. & Ive known him since 1999
4 Tony NEVER EVER loaded or even tried to load his gloves that travesty was the only way to get rid of him after he's spoiled Oscar & Floyd's plans by beating Cotto so badly. Neither had the stones to face him themselves hence the railroading.
I'm proud to have known & supported Tony all these years & if some of you peoples heroes had one fourth the stones & courage Tony has then maybe you could call them FIGHTERS!!
!!!! Vuva Antonio The Tijuana Tornado Margarito !!!!

He beat Cotto and Cintron twice. He fought Paul Williams close. You don't do that if you're a gatekeeper. That said, his fanboys are like Helenius and Charr fans, have you thinking he is some HOF talent or something... Very overrated, in my opinion, even considering how his piers do not view him fondly.

Ever since the glove wrap incident, most boxers and trainers in the industry view his accomplishments as null and have no respect for him. Sort of all you need to know.

A legend. The papa of Sergio Martinez and Miguel Cotto. Politics will keep him out of the hall of fame.
