I have raved about how highly I rate Arguello's right hand, but I've recently noticed just how effective his left hook was also. Here are couple of examples of him scoring effectively with the use of his left hook. http://youtube.com/watch?v=CsJzjR5iMLA It was the left hook that spelled the end for Mancini, buckling his legs visibly, and then the right sent him crashing to the canvas. http://youtube.com/watch?v=QBxXodXYEBI&feature=related Alexis went for the body attack in this fight, and Kobayashi made the fatal mistake of letting the explosive thin man know he was hurt. The left hook initially hurt Kobayashi and the same shot would finish him off later down the stretch. Beautiful precision. http://youtube.com/watch?v=reYKwmy4qjg&feature=related An underrated action packed bout that sent Escalera the floor a number of times and all coming from an Alexis left hook. The last one that ended the fight didn't seem to come with much leverage but this still had Escalera down and then on ***** street. Alexis Arguello had a great left hook the head and body. :good
Sounds like you are discovering Arguello on a much deeper level the last week. Keep digging, you won't be disappointed. His left hook was always reknowned as well - bone shattering two fisted power.
The left hook was vicious. Mancinni himself says it was the left hook that hurt him, but if you watch that sequence of punches in slo-mo, when Arguello hit Ray in the chest with a right upper-cut he looks like somebody shot him! Also, few of todays fans realize what a devastating body puncher Arguello was. In essence Alexis could change the course of a fight or close the show with a whole variety of punches from either hand.
Back onto Arguello's right hand. I thought it was pretty lethal against Rooney at 140lbs. The way the punch impacted and how Rooney hit the canvas was like he had been hit with a mini missile. Gil Glancy said afterwards "I don't care who Arguello hits that right hand with at 140lbs, once he lands their gonna go" Pryor proved Glancy wrong on that one.
..............All his punches were perfect. I can't pick his right over his left, or vice-versa, just so incredibly well-rounded. A thread on his jab could be made too. He was great at varying the snap and power on it; some were range finders, some were meant to disguise the right hand following it, some were meant to go through the back of your head.
I had heard a long time ago that Arguello's body punching caused Cornelius Boza-Edwards to soil his shorts. Any truth to this?
In retrospect I've often thought that the Rooney fight was one of the things that went wrong in Arguello's quest to win a then unprecedented 4th world title. Rooney was supposed to be a good tune-up, but we all saw how that turned out:admin
