Always wondered that myself. Saw his record on boxrec but never got to see one of his fights. Imagine there's stuff on youtube.
Don't know much about him. Just started watching his fights, he looks pretty good at least, and his record is solid enough . He never got any TV exposure here in the UK so I kind of missed out on him.
The Indonesian Joe Calzaghe, who only seemed to fight at home or in the nearby vacinity? He does have a W over JMM, why was there never a Pacqiauo fight? Seeing as both fought Marquez around the same time, both were the same weight and from a similar part of the globe? its like Calzaghe and Ottke all over again.
He was a solid fighter. I wouldn't call him a very gifted technician or great modern talent like boxed ...though mind you, i am a curmudgeonly scumbag.Good mover, capable of being very solid fundamentally, but rarely that sharp or consistent offensively...this is what held him back from making the win clearer against Marquez, as Juan was overextending all fight and seriously struggling with his footwork and punching angles, but John had no consistent or overwhelming enough offensive tools to score often enough after he'd made Juan overcommit. he could still be a tidy boxer though, and was willing to fight as well as box if forced upon him.Plenty of heart and i agree that he shouldn't be accused of just being a "hometown" champ. Comparisons i'd make to other featherweights in terms of style and talent would be guys like Manuel Medina(early 90s, not the old one many remember), Jim McDonnell, Tom Johnson etc I think he's a very good example of how being well schooled fundamentally and just learning some ringcraft can ensure you have a very good title run in this recent boxing period, without even really needing to stand out in many areas technically.
