I totally hear you, have a lot of stuff stuck on analog/VHS that I would love to move over. It seems like such a ****ing hassle though.

I think Colin hit his ceiling with all said and done. I thought a draw was fair in the first McCrory fight and a narrow win to Milton was fair too. I reckon Mac is right, Jones may well have beaten McCrory at home as there is nothing between them.

I don't think he was a phenomenal puncher but he was certainly a very good one. I think you could put him around Sibbo somewhere but below Minter.

So what was his exact ceiling... European/British level or something like that?

Why do you make less of his power than most others here? Don't think much of the chin of Laing or what?

He did end his career with 23 knockouts in 26 wins... the three he didn't win by stoppage were a trio of fights in his career, two eight rounders and a six rounder. After that it was 20 knockout wins in a row.

He was a good welterweight contender. Nothing special. A comparable welterweight today would be someone like a Jessie Vargas. Good contender. Good fighter. Not really championship caliber welterweight.

Well, Vargas doesn't have any exceptional qualities... he is throughly solid in literally everything, a jack of all trades master of none sort of fighter. He does have a bit below average power, where as Jones had real assets like a seemingly iron chin (Curry never wobbled him and was a monster laying everyone out at the time) with a big wallop in either fist. See what I mean?

Iron Chin? To have an iron chin, don't you have to take blows to the chin from some monster punchers?

Going three full rounds with Curry wasn't a big deal. Most people did.

Also, frankly, Jessie Vargas has beaten better fighters than Colin Jones. So I may be giving Colin more credit than he deserves.

Jones was a good fighter. But he was just a guy.

Most people did? Colin Jones certainly didn't manage four rounds being tagged several times flush in each round... he was down and out from all of two combined flush punches.

Vargas probably has beaten a much better collection of fighters than Jones at this point, you're right, but also remember his very generous judging treatment in several of his bouts. It looks great on paper but when you dig into how excruciatingly close several of those wins are you start to see the real mixed results reality behind the record to Vargas.

I'm from the USA and Jones was a soild contender who could punch.
He'd knockout Honeyghan and his victories over Laing were very impressive.
Also gave Mccroy fits when at the time Mccroy was one of the best in his weight class .

Putting his power below phenomenal isn't trying to convey he couldn't hit - he had big power for sure. I would have liked to see some more fights vs top 10'ers for more of a measure. He's got an impressive KO ratio for sure.

Mac might be able to put more perspective on whether his power reached the phenomenal level.

I think he reached his ceiling as his era featured some excellent champions and imo McCrory was the weakest of a trio including Starling and Curry.

Could he win in another era? Certainly. Breland could run somewhat cold and was stoppable at points among others. I'm sure Colin would be in the mix somewhere today.

Are you saying Jones was ko'd, Curry never even floored him! The ref stopped the fight because Jones nose was badly gashed horizontally across the bridge. Curyy was electrifying that night, pushing Jones back refusing to concede ground aginst a big puncher. On his day Curry was a great fighter, he had too many tools for Jones that night.

Nah.I think he caught McCrory at a good time. McCrory was still untested and pretty raw at 21 and that was probably Jones best chance of beating him then. I think that McCrory is a underrated fighter and did improve after winning the title making several defences of his title before being caught early by a prime Don Curry in their unification match.

Was trying to say Milton was down from a combined two punches where as Jones absorbed several Curry shots in just about every round they fought.

Yet MCrory had Jones down in their second fight. Does that mean McCrory was a bigger hitter than Curry?
