I always struggled to get an idea of how good or how average he was, he has never really been in vs amazing opposition and was 48-0 at one point with 23 defenses.
He was a legit top guy at 175 back in the day. Very underrated and would have had a good chance at being the first to crack Roy’s fragile chin.
The guy could jab, punch, take a punch and keep stalking you. RJJ would have likely won, but would have been tested for sure.
HBO tried to get Roid Jones to fight Michalczewski, but Roid refused to fight him for any amount of money. I got to see him fight and was surprised, he was one hell of a fighter. He would have knocked Roid out and Roid knows it. Roid turned down a lot of money to avoid him, HBO was frustrated.......................
It's the truth.................I remember it well.................Roid was getting paid huge money to fight postal workers, janitors, garbage men, etc., no joke. Go back and check it out. When I first saw Michalczewsi fight, I was very surprised, he could fight, had power to spare and was skilled, he was a killer!!!
48-0 (38) overall and 25-0 in LHW World Title fights before suffering his first loss. He beat some good fighters like- L. Barber, G.Rocchigiani x2, V. Hill, M. Griffin, R. Hall x2, and D. Harmon among others. I don't think he would have defeated Roy Jones but they definitely should have fought.
He got some questionable stoppages that I recall, and then in other fights, refs went out of the way not to stop it when he was getting pummeled. Richard Hall seemed to be re-arranging his face, broken jawbone clearly out of place included. Had the situation been reversed the ref would have stopped the fight. Anyway, anybody who is having tough fights with Jones Jr. left overs isn't all that. Super Roid would have pummeled him.
Pretty much how I feel. DM was very good, and while I think Roy would have probably beaten him, that is by no means a given, and at the least, I think Michalczewski would have given him a tougher fight than anyone was giving him at 175 in the late 90s early 00s. It's a real shame those 2 never fought when they both reigned as the division's two best for a number of years.
