The righthand that Duran dropped Davey Moore with in the 7th round was one of the most brutal punches Ive ever seen. He almost drove his mouthpiece down his throat. Duran was scary when he had something to prove.

    Yet the kid got up.:patsch

    Interesting Fact,

In November 1981 - When Japan's Tadashi Mihara defeated Rocky Fratto for the 'vacant' WBA Light-Middleweight Championship,,,

It totally screwed up the South African contingent's plan to get #6 WBA - Charlie 'The Silver Assassin' Weir the WBA title.

Under Japan's rule, no South African was permitted to enter Japan for employement.
And Japan, would not permit Tadahi Mihara to go to South Africa for a fight.

So, enter #10 WBA - Davey Moore, an '8' bout professional and just barely Top 10 rated.

In February 1982 - Davey Moore, was transplanted to got to Japan, win the WBA Light-Middleweight
Championship, and then bring it to South Africa (for a big fight purse) and hand it over to the 'The Silver Assassin'.

Then, in April 1982 - Davey went to South Africa, for what everyone presumed would be a beating,,,,,,,,,,,

How good was Davey Moore? We know how good he was as his record is there for all to see...how good could he have been? Now that's a different question with a different answer...one that we'll never know as the Duran fight ruined him...

On one hand for an 11 bout "novice" to fight the post-Cuevas Duran sounds like a gross mismatch, but as a world champion you should be prepared to take all-comers...

If he had been handled differently, more slowly, there may have been a different outcome.

I liked Moore. A good exciting fighter, better offensively than defensively but that was part of the attraction. A good puncher, brave and honest. He wasn't experienced enough to deal with Duran's "old school" tactics (the thumb!), and the dental surgery shortly before the fight was madness.

You have to that in some respects he was badly handled...rushed to the title and matched with Duran (after surgery!!!) too early.

Moore could have been a good one, I agree he was rush. Wins title in 8 fights, and than he is suppose to end Duran? Kinda of a big step if you think about it. Duran ruin him imo.

Also Moore died young. It was tragic, but if I was in his shoes, I would not have try to stop my car from rolling backwards alone and unsupported like he did.

    Davey Moore,

    Was absolutely 'not rushed'

According to his Manager/Trainer Leon Washington, it was a 'calculated' decision
to go after the WBA Light-Middleweight Championship in Febraury 1982.

Despite the 8-0-0 (5 KO's) record, Davey was plenty experienced, with 96 amateur wins
    and International experience.

At 22 1/2, and ranked as the #10 WBA Light-Middleweight, there was more to gain
on the upside, than not taking the bout versus Tadahi Mihara.

And, Davey was a clear (2-1) Favorite to defeat the 'undefeated' Mihara.

    R/T,

    'The 'Skinny'

    June 25, 1981 (Houston Astrodome)

WBA Light-Middleweight Champion- Ayub Kalule defended his Championship versus
    WBC Welterweight Champion,- Ray Leonard.

Immediately after winning the WBA Crown, Ray Leonard 'vacated' the Light-Middleweight
    Championship.

On the undercard of that fight card, the #1 WBA Light-Middleweight (Japan's) 26 year-old Tadashi Mihara
13-0-0 (10 KO's) and the OPBF Light-Middleweight Champion, was being 'showcased' as the next challenger.

His opponent, was Philippine - Ramon Dionisio 29-8-0 (11 KO's). Dionisio had been
stopped (L KO 7) by Tadashi Mihara a-year-and-half earlier (February 1980) in a one-sided bout,
so he seemed to be a 'safe opponent', as had been KO'd in all '8' of his losses.

Well, Tadashi Mihara got rocked badly in this bout, and was nearly stopped by the
light-hitting Dionisio in Round 4. Somehow, Tadashi re-grouped in the next round, and put together
'a-charge' and stopped (KO 5) the Philippine.

After this fight, the boxing reporters called Tadashi Mihara 'inept' and a poor excuse for a
#1 Challenger by the WBA. And many felt, he was nothing more than a 'preliminary fighter' who
would have a 'hard time' defeating any mediocre 154 lb. boxer in the United States.
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Where was Davey Moore,

On May 23, 1981 - in San Remo, Italy

Davey Moore, (one month shy of age 22) with a record of 5-0-0 (2 KO's), scored a 'major upset' when he Knocked-out
    (TKO 1) #10 WBA Light-Middleweight - Joszef Nsubuga 23-2-0 (12 KO's).

    'Tomorrow's Champions'

    KO Magazine (August 1981)

    No Davey Moore.

Bob Arum promoted all of Davey's early bouts.

Duran did great when he had the right style in front of him and when he was favored and winning a fight. He knew how to make it as bad a loss for the other guy as he could. Moore was already hurt in that fight and ready to go. Too bad Moore was thumbed, but a guy with 11 fights cannot really beat a legend with 75 fights.

I have been in that position before when I car starts to roll. You panic a little, so I can see how that happens. It probably happened so fast. I had a car start to slip and it was rolling. I yelled for my neighbor in his house who ran out and another one ran out and we stopped the car. Where I lived many years ago was on a incline, and the car would have rolled down the street. In situations like that you think first about preventing the car from rolling away, and I am sure Davey thought the same as I always did.

The unfortunate thing about 'Bronx' Davey Moore.

He never absorbed punches well, and his eyes would always swell up.

    A forgotten bout,

    Sunday - June 21, 1981

Playboy Hotel & Casino (Atlantic City, New Jersey)

    Davey Moore 6-0-0 (3 KO's) versus Kevin Rooney 15-0-0 (5 KO's).

Davey Moore avenged an amateur loss to Cus D'Amato protoge, Kevin Rooney,
    by scoring a TKO 7.

Yep. He was NOT overrated. He was the extreme example of someone who was rushed.

What a fun fighter to watch though.

I think his best win was against a still useful Ayub Kalule.

So (also) KO Magazine does not like Bob Arum ?
i guessed correctly that d left 1 was Tony Ayala Jr.
i managed 2 read d names of Alex Ramos & Johnny Bumphus .
But who is it between them ? i guessed that would b Matthew Hilton , but seemingly i was wrong .
