I just got done watching the Barkley fight for the 5th time and Barkley was throwing some hellacious punches on Duran and Duran only seemed to be staggered once in the 8th round when he did a 180 after Barkley landed that left hook. Like Larry Holmes he was only stopped once (not counting the fight when he was 47 years against Joppy) against a great fighter. I know Dejesus knocked him down twice. So among the great fighters how do you rate his chin?
8. That Barkley fight is great isn't it? One of the best fights, I think. "This mother****er acts like I killed Davey Moore. But he is the one I am going to kill. Watch."
Again as I said in another thread people assume fighters have granite chins but they're often not taking fully fledged shots on the button round after round like say Gatti, Chacon. Duran had some of the best defense of all time for an aggressive fighter and he was rarely taking flush shots consistently because he would often roll with punches. Now I'm not saying Duran didn't have a good chin can but anyone remember Duran taking alot of flush punches bang on the chin consistently ? To be fair though I do remember Duran taking a peach of a left hook from Barkley which span his head round who was a much bigger man I can't remember exact round.....but for the most part Duran did roll with alot of Barkley's punches. I would say anywhere between 8.0/8.5 I'll go with 8.
8-9,he did roll a ton with punches but his chin was rock solid regardless, not even a full power flush **** by Barkley's left hook broke him down.
If there was no Hearns fight he would be a lock at 9 or 9.5. I'm not holding a ko loss to an atg puncher top 50 fighter who won a belt at light heavyweight against Duran. He's a solid 9 for me.
At least 9 at LW. Understandably drops as he moves up in weight, particularly LMW and above, though it was still solid all the way up at MW.
Duran also took some bigtime body shots from Iran, so you have an Ali type guy at absorbing great to the head and to the body.
Insanely great. Mostly went down or hurt when out of position and hit with good timing- And even then, you still had to have heavy hands to make him go down. How do you guys feel about him being down against Sims in the eighth round (as well as him losing his mouthpiece a couple times throughout the course of the fight, 6 and 8)? It wasn't ruled as a knockdown, but it looked fair to me, he just was out of position and got put down. Robbie hurt him multiple times during the course of the fight, and there was no leglock or slip, so I don't know why it was just ignored (the commentators also seemed pretty biased towards Duran for most of the fight- but it could've just been cause he was the big name in the ring).
