What many don't mention is that he argubaly has the best 5 wins out of any fighter ever. How many greats can say they are 3-0 against a guy like Archie Moore and 2-0 against someone like Charley Burley (while only 20 years old) ?

Ali doesn't have a single win over anyone that is even remotely close to either.

Duran has a singular win over one fighter that matches up to Moore, and then drops off immediately (though he did give a good effort vs Hagler)

Even Robinson's 2 best wins, the ones over Gavilan, are only really omparable to the Burley wins. He doesn't have someone like a prime Moore on his ledger. Though he has a bit more depth over quality opponents compared to Charles.

Only Greb's wins over Walker, Tunney and Loughran have an argument for being better. And it's still close.

I found some of these quotes which puts into perspective how godly his resume is.

Charles best opponents are a murder's row of greats, including 10 Hall of Fame fighters 9 of whom he beat, Joe Louis, Anton Christoforidis, Gus Lesnevich, Charley Burley twice, Lloyd Marshall twice, Jersey Joe Walcott twice, Archie Moore three times, Jimmy Bivins four times, and Joey Maxim five times. He met and nearly beat Rocky Marciano when he already was showing signs of the ALS which would kill him.

He had 23 fights with Hall of Famers, and won 19 of them!
    • He is the only natural middleweight in the modern age to win and defend the undisputed heavyweight title, and defend it eight times, including beating the Great Joe Louis! (Floyd Patterson never had a single pro fight at middleweight)
    • He is the only fighter in history, in any weight class, to meet 6 top 10 of all time fighters, and defeat 5 of them!
    • he was the best fighter on the planet in three different weight classes! (and that is three of the eight original weight classes, equivalent to 8 of the 17 we have today!)

Charles was 3-0 against Hall of Famer Archie Moore, 2-0 against the most avoided fighter in history in Charley Burley, 2–1 against the second most avoided middleweight in history in Lloyd Marshall, 3-0 against Joey Maxim 1–0 against Joe Louis, and 4-1 against #20 all time heavyweight Jimmy Bivins in his career.

Charles knocked out the great Lloyd Marshall twice. And then there is the death of Sam Baroudi, this is important because after his death Charles never went after an opponent with the same killer instinct that he had before. When analyzing a fighter one must look at him at his peak, and in his prime Ezzard Charles was perhaps the greatest all time fighter in history, with a more than all time great record.

Ezzard Charles record against top 100 competition:

#1 of all time (heavy) Joe Louis

#2 of all time (light heavy) Archie Moore

#3 of all time (heavy) Rocky Marciano

#4 of all time (welter) Charley Burley

#9 of all time (light heavy) Joey Maxim

#10 of all time (heavy) Jimmy Bivens

#17 of all time (heavy) Jersey Joe Walcott

#18 of all time (light heavy) Gus Lesnevich

#21 of all time (middle) Lloyd Marshall

#25 of all time (heavy) Elmer Ray

#38 of all time (middleweight) Teddy Yarosz

    #39 Oakland Billy Smith

#41 of all time (middle) Anton Christoforidis

#50 of all time (heavy) Joe Baski

#59 of all time (heavy) Nino Valdes

#87 of all time (heavy) Rex Layne

#95 of all time (heavy) Tommy Jackson

Ezzard Charles fought 17 top 100 of all time fighters, tying Ali, and beat 15 of 17 at least once. That puts him just one behind from tying Ali again!

Charles is alone in boxing history in meeting 6 top 10 all time fighters and beating 5 of them.

A great summary, and I will only add that he was a very decent, generous and musically talented guy who wouldn't dream of being in a fight outside of a competition.

x4 undisputed says he dominated HW more so than any champion since Mike Tyson. This man was a LHW with a strong LHW resume whose undisputed defenses rival Joe Frazier. GOAT candidate is not a stretch.

You wouldn't consider Ali's win over Frazier, Liston, Foreman or Norton as comparable?

His list of opponents that he's faced and beaten is just so stacked with HOFers / ATGs. An incredible career he's had.

Surely he has a case of having just as great, if not a slightly greater resume than Sugar Ray Robinson.
