We always hear a lot about how good Foreman's power was, but I always felt that his jab was actually pretty decent too, at least when he actually decided to use it. If I recall correctly, he used it to decent effect in the early stages of the Lyle fight before abandoning it to slug with Lyle.

    What do you think?

  2. 1 gud jab but also unused alot in 1 early career IMO m8.

He had a heavy ramming jab.
Excellent use of the jab against Chuvalo.

He set Frazier up with a jab or two in both their fights.
I always thought he should have used it more against Ali too, and would have had more success if he had done so.
Many fiercely disagree with that though, believing it wouldn't have helped at all.

I don't think it would have helped him in Kinshasa. Ali would simply have used the same weapon, with greater effect.

His jab itself was terrific, but unfortunately he lacked the ability to use it as effectively as he could have. Foreman's jab sent people backwards and even knocked them down, a very effective tool in cutting the ring off for him.

Back in 97 when he beat Savarese, The Ring called his jab the divisions most dominant jab.
Heavy concussive, like a big log of tree being swung into your face.
He used it better in his last career, than in his first.

It might have kept Ali at bay when Ali opened up with his own straight punches though. Ali would have out-jabbed Foreman, but Ali was open to jabs too, so George could have broken his rhythm to some extent.

I'm not saying Foreman should have planned to use the jab like that from the outset, but after 4 rounds it was clear he needed to try something other than what he was doing. And when Ali opened up at the end of the 5th with straight pin-point punches, the writing was on the wall.
The occasional stiff jab from Foreman might have kept Ali on a defensive.

Though I don't see it making much difference.

It depends on who you're comparing him to. Of the fighters of the same type, punching destroyers who are in the top 15 type bracket he's weaker than Louis and Liston. Also not as good as Ali, Holmes, Holyfield and Charles, guys like that.

He'd tend to be better than the swarmers arguably, Frazier and Marciano, and that pre 30's guys maybe. But amongst the great heavyweights he'd be bringing up the rear.

No shame on Foreman though as many of the great heavyweights were adapt users of the jab. Holmes, Ali, Liston, it's tough to top them.

Tyson had a heck of a jab too.

I need to see more of Ezzard Charles, haven't noticed his jab. It's true, many of the great heavyweight champs used a wicked jab. Probably true in every division, but obviously heavyweights turn a jab into a JAB.
