We need a round Robin between the bodybuilders of heavyweight boxing... Bruno vs Norton vs Holyfield vs Mike Weaver vs Cleveland Williams vs Anthony Joshua. Who comes out on top?
Good fighter. Would be a top 10 contender in most if not all eras. He fought in a very deep era. No shame in losing to Tyson or Lewis. He was actually beating Lewis till he got caught. No shame in losing to Witherspoon either. Bruno's issues were that he couldn't clinch when hurt and that he lacked a lot of quality wins. After the first Tyson loss, Bruno had an opportunity to build a resume. Fights against Holyfield, Bowe, Mercer, Morrison, Ruddock, etc. were likely there. And he didn't take any of them. When he finally went up against Lewis, he was winning but got tired and clipped. He was beating Bonecrusher Smith and got clipped. His defense and ability to recover when hurt were poor. He had good size, reasonably quick hands, good skills, very good punching power. I think in any era, he could blow some guys away just with his size and power. But a durable opponent with good stamina? That is where Bruno would struggle. Still, good fighter. All time top 70 heavyweight IMO.
