I was sitting here watching his fights before his motorcycle accident and he was an absolute phenomenal fighter. Top class Brazilian jujitsu, excellent striker, and tough. Now he's a shell. What's your opinion of him before the accident?

Why would you say he is a shell now?

To be honest I think the current version of Mir would beat any previous version.

Well he seems to have more fear in him....like he believes to much in his mortality.

He's probably a better fighter now to be fair. That said im not sold on him. He's inconsistent and has some horrible losses to average guys.

I was thinking about this the other day after watching the countdown for Vera vs Jones.

I think Mir may be better suited to big heavies who are not incredibly dynamic i.e. Lesnar, Sylvia and Nog (his standout wins). These guys are good but not in the small guy way. Take away their size and what comes with it and they perhaps become average fighters. Mir has lost to two 205 fights in Vera and Freeman.

Mir's skills is a mixture of good and very good. Once he locks a sub, I think he is great because he will literally rip your limb off. He is one of the few fighters that put fear in me for the other guy - Sylvia, Kongo etc

Well hes recovered from the accident phyiscal and mentally so thats behind him. Frank's BJJ skills are as good now as they where before and lets face it thats basically his entire game from 01-04 take the fight to the ground or be took down and pull off a quick submission. Now his stamina is better and he phyiscally just looks in much better shape. Frank has also developed into a decent striker when in his first career if you will he had no striking to speak of. All Frank back then was a dynamic submission artist with no stamina or striking.

I think he is better than before. Im looking forward to a rematch with Lesnar. A motorcycle accident like that can ruin a combative career. He came back. one can only guess what would have evolved if it had never happened. he has a lot of mental toughness, like him or not. he is determined and I wouldnt rule him out.

His career after he signed to fight Lesnar at UFC 81 is when he truly turned it around.

Can't really say after his accident because he was still really messed up mentally. He had to get over that hurdle that let him really continue with his training in a serious manner. It seemed to take off after he beat Lesnar at UFC 81 and for his fight with Nogueira at UFC 92. He's since taken it even further.

And prior to his accident he was very, very good, but fairly (though not completely) one dimensional. He was easily one of the best HWs then, but then again, you also have to remember the average level of competition back then was not even close to as good as it is today.

Imagine what we'll be saying 10-20 years from now! Scary!

I really dont understand this call
hes ten times the fighter he used to be. In fact hes arguably the most imroved fighter of the last half a decade.
his striking has improved leaps and bounds and he seems to work harder and is more focused than ever..

Perhaps I'm taking the lesner defeat as my only angle. I see all your points. Bad judgement call on my part and I admit I was wrong.

A perfect example of a fighter who needed to hit a bottom (injury, personal life) to figure out that he was coasting by on natural talent. The injury forced him to become a MMA fighter, not a grappler who just looked for a submission.

Good post and good for him to take such a bad event like a legbreak then the difficult times that followed like being addicted to pain pills and alcohol, issues with his wife, losing his Championship and being beat down like he was in his return fights then be able to make himself mentally and physically stronger then he ever was before. Like him or not IMO Frank Mir is a guy people should look to for inspiration. I always like when talent and hard work meet up like for example what Penn is doing now or what GSP has always been doing and the possiblities are freaking endless on what they can do.

Frank Mir is definitely a top 5 heavyweight in the world right now. I watched his return fights over and over last night and realized Vera and Lesner losses weren't enough to warrent such a bad call. I'm looking for him to end Carwin early with a kneebar. Frank has incredible knee bars from nowhere.
